What old games would you like to see "reinvented"?

I was digging through some old games I had and was wondering, "With today's technology, this game could be awesome."

So what old games from the 70's, 80's, 90's would you like to see updated with the computer technology we have now to make better games?

I would like to see:

Defender
The Colony War Series
Shellshock (a PS1 tank game)
Joust
The Army Men series

Well, I don't exactly want to see these games turned into 3D MMOs or FPS, but a touch-up ala Super Mario All Stars or Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete would be nice; fixing a few bugs, improving the gameplay, and moderning the graphics, but otherwise keeping the original gameplay and style intact.

Blaster Master
Zelda II
The Guardian Legend
Adventures of Lolo

A little-known game called Detroit. It was all about founding and running your own car company, and included features like letting you design your car models using predesigned parts. It's a great concept, but the micromanagement is awkward with the mid-90s DOS interface, and it runs terribly on modern machines. Plus, with a Sims-style interface, I think that designing the cars would be extremely engaging,

Deus Ex needs to be reinvented. The genre it helped create is only now coming into its own. Thankfully, a squeal is near :D

In terms of "re-invented".....one thing that I would kill to see, is a new Zork game done Oblivion style. Zork, as well as it's spin off series, Enchanter, were set in the world of Quendor. Quendor was the first world in computer gaming, to be fleshed out with a backstory and history. Only the Ultima games could offer anything comparable in this sense.

The original games were text only....then after the success of MYST, a new set of Zork games came out in that style. And the fans of that era were faaaar more resistant to updating Zork to a true 3D world, than the earlier text fans were to graphic based games, even when it was obvious that the MYST style game was clearly a thing of the past.

They decried the death of the "adventure" game(read: puzzle game) and like old timers who didn't pay attention to the advances in technology, didn't understand how far games had come. They still associated "3D" with the mindless action of FPS and were largely ignorant of the massive strides in world building that games like Morrowind offered.

Ironically, Fallout 3 has captured the feel of the original Zork games better than the graphic Zork games...Like the original Zork, it takes place in a world after the fall of a great empire...it has elements of humour, but those elements primarily exist in the documents and relics you find than in the present. The latter Zork games had bad attempts at Monty Python style humour and it just didn't feel right.
The humour was too obvious and in your face, instead of the sparse, wry and dry humour of the early text games.

Everytime I walk into a cave in Fallout 3 and see how awesome the Great Underground Empire could look, I want to kick Activision in the collective balls for shelving PC gaming's first Classic Series.

The next two games I list would benefit from a graphics stand point, but I don't know that they'd need to be "re-invented". Sometimes the original game mechanics are fine and don't need to be over done with over detailed, fancy 3D.

Star Control 2 and Star Flight.

They have yet to make a Star Trek game that does Star Trek better than Star Flight. It has exploration, diplomacy, combat, mining and more worlds to explore than you can shake a stick at. And a story as well, one you have to figure out. The music was friggin awesome in this game and it's electronic sounds really made you feel as if you were out in the lonesome void of space. Fuck all that symphonic bullshit you get nowadays. I'd be happy if this game stuck with it's 2D roots, but had the kind of graphic quality that "Weird Worlds Of Infinite Space" had.

Ditto for Star Control 2. Keep the 2D interface, spruce up the graphics to modern standards and make it easy to mod.

It's a prequel, actually, but we're still squealing in anticipation (mostly). :bolian:

As for remakes, so many classic BBC Micro games should be remade, especially Exile - but not like the recent independent remake whose name currently escapes me, which maintains the original's 2D physics-enabled platformer stylings, but rather as a Bioshock-style action-adventure perhaps.

We also need an updated version of Master of Magic. Now.

Do the older X-Wing and TIE Fighter games work under Windows 7/Vista? If not, they could do with another major reworking (including the cutscenes ;)) - they were great space combat games, and in TIE Fighter it was particularly great to be briefed by Lt. Gruber from "'Allo 'Allo." :D.

And Lemmings. Now is the time to bring back Lemmings. :adore:

This!

And definitely This!!

Erm....let's see...

  • Star Wars Dark Forces
  • Star Wars Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight
  • Star Wars Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast
  • Star Wars Jedi Knight : Jedi Academy
  • Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force
  • Doom

The Wing Commander series.

Oh can you imagine how Wing commander would look on a next gen console.

I remember when the original Wing commander came out on the Amiga 500, i was so blown away by it that i bought and installed a third party 14mhz CPU add-on that piggy backed the original Amiga CPU and doubled its speed, and you had a little switch at the back to move between the original 7mhz and the power house 14mhz as some game would not run with at the 14hz setting.....totally awesome game for its time that i would love to see come out now on all the fancy console and PC hardware.

Another game i would love to see using all the eye candy goodness of today's hardware would be StarFleet and Klingon academy...those would be awesome.

Yes I'm aware i am using the word awesome too much, but its awesome.:)

Star Trek - A Final Unity

and, most definately,

X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter

Jesus, that would be such an amazing game with the today's graphics.

One of my early game programming projects was a Lemmings type game. I couldn't get my builders and blockers to work right though. The other actions were relatively easy to do.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Final Fantasy VII yet. :p

Edit: Ah, wait. I still haven't had my morning coffee and I read the title as "...Like to See Reinvented." Personally, I rather see it recreated.
