In terms of "re-invented".....one thing that I would kill to see, is a new Zork game done Oblivion style. Zork, as well as it's spin off series, Enchanter, were set in the world of Quendor. Quendor was the first world in computer gaming, to be fleshed out with a backstory and history. Only the Ultima games could offer anything comparable in this sense.
The original games were text only....then after the success of MYST, a new set of Zork games came out in that style. And the fans of that era were faaaar more resistant to updating Zork to a true 3D world, than the earlier text fans were to graphic based games, even when it was obvious that the MYST style game was clearly a thing of the past.
They decried the death of the "adventure" game(read: puzzle game) and like old timers who didn't pay attention to the advances in technology, didn't understand how far games had come. They still associated "3D" with the mindless action of FPS and were largely ignorant of the massive strides in world building that games like Morrowind offered.
Ironically, Fallout 3 has captured the feel of the original Zork games better than the graphic Zork games...Like the original Zork, it takes place in a world after the fall of a great empire...it has elements of humour, but those elements primarily exist in the documents and relics you find than in the present. The latter Zork games had bad attempts at Monty Python style humour and it just didn't feel right.
The humour was too obvious and in your face, instead of the sparse, wry and dry humour of the early text games.
Everytime I walk into a cave in Fallout 3 and see how awesome the Great Underground Empire could look, I want to kick Activision in the collective balls for shelving PC gaming's first Classic Series.
The next two games I list would benefit from a graphics stand point, but I don't know that they'd need to be "re-invented". Sometimes the original game mechanics are fine and don't need to be over done with over detailed, fancy 3D.
Star Control 2 and Star Flight.
They have yet to make a Star Trek game that does Star Trek better than Star Flight. It has exploration, diplomacy, combat, mining and more worlds to explore than you can shake a stick at. And a story as well, one you have to figure out. The music was friggin awesome in this game and it's electronic sounds really made you feel as if you were out in the lonesome void of space. Fuck all that symphonic bullshit you get nowadays. I'd be happy if this game stuck with it's 2D roots, but had the kind of graphic quality that "Weird Worlds Of Infinite Space" had.
Ditto for Star Control 2. Keep the 2D interface, spruce up the graphics to modern standards and make it easy to mod.
