What is your opinion of season 3 as a whole?

You'll note that gabby has totally ignored what Maurice said about Cicely Tyson in Eastside/Westside, because that doesn't fit their narrative.

This is in contrast to Uhura in the Kelvin films, which made it seem like she got her posting on the Enterprise because she was sleeping with her teacher. Oral sensitivity, indeed
While I agree about SNW Uhura, this assumption Kelvin Uhura always bothers me. She was top in the class yet didn't warrant posting to a prestigious assignment? That was strange and she wasn't assigned because she was sleeping with Spock but because she should have been there regardless of her relationship.

Oh, I'm sure her assignment to the Enterprise was warranted, but I've just never been 100% onboard with the whole sleeping with your professor part of their relationship. The line about her demonstrating on multiple occasions her exceptional "aural sensitivity" didn't help. I'm sorry, I know a blowjob joke when I hear one.

I did not like it either but her assignment was not due to her sleeping with the professor was my point. Don't care about a blowjob joke.

Yes, i remember Spock tried to assign her to the Farragut to make it appear that he wasn't playing favourites. Then she basically pulled the girlfriend card and got her way. Kind of a low point in a film I generally enjoy a great deal.

I guess that's one way to see it.

Yes, I enjoy the film way more than most Trek.

The core cast of TOS are

Kirk
Spock
Mccoy
Uhura
Scotty
Chekov
Sulu
The main cast of TOS was only Kirk, Spock and McCoy, as reflected by the fact they were the only ones to be listed in the opening credits. And McCoy didn't become main cast until the second season. The rest were all recurring guest stars or even co-stars. Now yes, these days, Scotty, Uhura, Sulu and Chekov are considered to be part of TOS's central ensemble by virtue of being the ones who appeared in the six original movies, but that's irrelevant to the time it was made, where anyone who knew anything about television only considered Kirk, Spock and McCoy to be TOS's main cast.
Also Considering Martin Luther King wrote to Nichelle and told her to stay on the show because her presence just been there was having an impact on TV.
The MLK story? Seriously? His own family has refuted that.

I actually really liked the Spock / Uhura relationship in JJ-Trek and thought it built reasonably on their friendship in TOS. "In another life..."

But BOY I hated that scene.

I may be very wrong (would not be the first time) but I thought the way their relationship was told was of someone being so exceptional piquing Spock's interest as opposed to her getting where she did because she was with Spock

It is emphasised when Spock tries to assign her to the Farragut (overcorrecting to avoid the appearance of bias) and she, in no uncertain terms, tells him she has earned the Enterprise and shouldn't miss out because she is dating him

You are absolutely right and I agree with you...but it is very easy to see them as an ensemble if your first introduction to TOS was the films. Obviously Kirk, Spock, McCoy were the leads but the rest of the crew was presented as main characters and it wasn't until I was much older (saw my first TOS film in about 1994 but didn't really watch the series properly until well into the 2000s (I'd seen the "key" episodes but I reckon only 15-20 of them at most before the digital era of TV started in mid 2000s and it was shown on like Channel 78 or sommat)

Even then it was only when I joined this board and learned more from the BTS and production side that I even truly comprehended the gulf between the trio and the rest.

When? Where?
Just did some digging through other times the story's been brought up here on Trek BBS and it looks like I got my wires crossed. The issue wasn't that MLK's family refuted it, but rather Nichelle Nichols herself was frequently changing the details of the story over the years, leading some to question the veracity of it.

The closest I've seen to the King family addressing the subject was in the doco Woman In Motion, where MLK III appears, but he never actually addresses Star Trek or Uhura/Nichols. The way the bit is cut suggests he didn’t state that his family watched the show, because if he had, they would certainly have used it.

Absolutely true. It just rings wrong in many ways. "Aural sensitivity" doesn't do the scene any favors.

Never mind the innuendo. She's throwing Spock's own words back in his face - quoting the report card he wrote, in effect saying, "You said I was qualified to be on the Enterprise, after all." Apparently Uhura's ears are so good they impress a Vulcan. High praise, indeed. Yet serving on the same ship is where he draws the line - she's practically already the teacher's pet, in the traditional sense.
