What is the reason for the existence of "Star Trek: very Short Treks"?

From what I saw, I didn't think it was funny. I think it wanted to be funny. Not the same thing. It's like the stupid Slippin' Jimmy cartoon that was meant to be a spin-off of Better Call Saul, but even worse.

What I liked about TAS was that it felt like a fourth season of TOS, and certain episodes were made that could only be done in animation, offering something new to the table. It didn't feel like the intended audience was fourth-graders. Whereas it felt like Very Short Treks actually was written by fourth-graders. Or at least mental fourth-graders.

I had Paramount+ for a month in December. Caught the latest STLD season, tried the FRASIER revival but couldn't get over the laugh track, thought STRANGE ANGEL was amazing, and finally saw Mulholland Drive which immediately jumped to being a Top 10 film for me. But... nothing on VERY SHORT TREKS. Was it Zaslav-ed? Unless it was "season 3" of SHORT TREKS?

I know from Inglorious Treksperts it's likely a new level of NuTrek dumpster fire, but apparently the PRODIGY head writer wrote one of the eps which is actually supposed to be good?

Primarily this, but they were also meant to be a tribute to TAS. The problem, however, was that the producers decided to adopt the attitude of ‘we’re going to make fun of TAS rather than give it a loving tribute.’

No. There is a clear difference between affectionately ribbing something and attacking it. VST does the former, not the latter.

Translation: the producers are idiots.

No.

Very Short Treks was not season three of Short Treks. Very Short Treks was only ever released on YouTube.

It was!

I found them pretty awful, frankly. I’m not happy that Star Trek now seems stuck on the obnoxious humour (this belongs on the controversial opinion thread probably, but I’m not a fan of the LDS style of humour or the MCU quippy tone of SNW). What should have been a tribute to TAS felt more of a piss-take and parody but without an ounce of cleverness or wit.

Quality-wise, I thought the VST were all over the map. Loved some, hated others, one was just OK, they really ran the gamut.

I think one thing that makes them feel weird is that they were clearly part of a larger pre-planned "Celebration Of Star Trek Animation" promo, which then got thrown out of whack when one of the current animated shows was cancelled and vanished during the time that promotion was happening.

For whatever reason, the Very Short treks were always just on YouTube (and I think StarTrek.com).

Also, Strange Angel! That has been on my to-watch list since 2018! :bolian:

The second season is a little weaker than the first, but definitely would recommend as a historical drama that's also genre adjacent. The guy that co-created TWIN PEAKS with David Lynch wrote a TP background mythology book that touched a lot on Jack Parsons... I was like how can that possibly be real and it really peaked my interest. Truth stranger than fiction.

The book the series was based on is available as an eBook on Amazon for like $2 if you want to know what "really happened" and "what happened next".

They were essentially thinly disguised promos for Paramount+ (and in particular Lower Decks, never mind that other show we buried a little while back).

They probably intended to do more but the strikes left us with just these things.

The shorts weren't particularly impressive, they all just seemed to take one joke or concept and drag it on to the point Picard's face wanted to meet his palm.

You’d have a point if there was anything “fun” to find in these shorts. Unfortunately most of them were painfully unfunny if not downright cringy. That first one with the guy basically complaining he can’t call people offensive names anymore? HiLaRiOuS! :p

And I couldn’t be more open to an unserious, laughing-at-itself version of Trek. This, for me, just was not it.

I became a fan because of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. That's the movie that hooked me.

Some of my favorite episodes:
"The Trouble With Tribbles"
"A Piece of the Action"
"I, Mudd"
"Deja Q"
"A Fistful of Datas" (technically not a comedy, but that scene, and you know what I'm talking about!)
"The House of Quark"
"Little Green Men"
"Who Mourns for Morn?"
"Take Me Out to the Holosuite"
"Bride of Chaotica"
"Tinker Tenor Doctor Spy"
"The Trouble With Edward"
"Those Old Scientists" (LD and SNW aren't my favorite New Trek series but putting them together was comic gold!)

"Spock's Brain" wasn't intended to be funny (or so they say), but I'll throw that one in too. ;)

Lwaxana Troi always had some good zingers too.
The same can be said for any Kirk/Spock/McCoy banter.

There are probably some episodes that I'm missing, this is all off the top of my head, but I think this is a good enough list. These were all funny. Very Short Treks wasn't.

Sorry, I just don't think picking your nose and greeting someone is funny. If you think it's funny, that's more of a reflection on you than it is on me.
