What is Star Trek: Discovery about?

Adventures in outer space.

I think it's a gross exaggeration to say the other series were "about" something more than that. Maybe DS9, but even that's a stretch.

^^^This. Probably applies to all future Star Trek shows too.

As I would expect.

I’d be more confident if there were more than three eps left. They have a lot of heavy lifting to do, and it seems like it would be easy to slam the door on the Georgiou storyline now that she’s gone. But they’ve dealt with Bunham’s pattern of insubordination, deceit and disregard for orders previously this season, so hopefully it comes to something.

Nailed it. Once Fuller left, it became a true prequel, exploring what led to Spock and Pike on the E. They said as much early on. It wasn't as I had hoped, merely a fun show set in the pre-TOS era.

Much of what it does is a callback/recapitulation (Pike, mirror u, Guardian, Spock's sister or even go back to S1 and exploring Klingons; or a deconstruction/rejection: we do season-long arcs, Burnham is not a Captain, etc.

Now we have a season-long arc about . . . the federation, Gene Coon intellectual property ca. 1967.

It's a show about Star Trek. Good call.

Which works nice, because I like Star Trek!

;)

Based on the reactions I've seen, Discovery is about making callbacks to previous Trek shows which is heresy because they should be creating their own path, and it's also about creating their own path which is heresy because they should be making better use of the lore.

Different people have different opinions. Yup. Should all fans of something all feel the same thing?

Star Trek: Discovery is about trauma and renewal. The common theme of all three seasons so far is surviving a profound trauma and then building yourself into a new person you never thought you could have been before. Moving to the 32nd Century literalized it.
