What is LOST like?

Rygel XIX

I'm looking for a new series to watch. One of the only current series that I haven't been watching is LOST. Is it worth my time?

Abosultely, yes. Some of season 2 and the first 6 episodes of season 3 get a little off track, but most of the time it's excellent.

Here's my take on Lost. I started watching it when it was new and I watched the first season pretty faithfully. But, after that first season, I couldn't take it any more. They kept raising the suspense level and introducing new mysteries without ever revealing any satisfying answers. Every answer they gave was just another, even bigger, question. It became too annoying, so I quit watching. Based on the ratings, though, I'm apparently in the minority. I think the story is interesting, but I feel like the writers tried too hard to make people keep watching.

They've answered questions. But they always do it with other questions.

Q: Why was a polar bear on the island?
A: Because Dharma was studying them.
Q: Why was Dharma studying polar bears?
A: Apparently as subjects for their teleportation experiments.
Q: Whaa....?
A: No idea.

That's the only thing that holds me back from picking up new shows - I hate getting into something to find out that the story that I've really got into will not have a proper ending (too many over the years to mention) - but it looks like Lost has been guaranteed for the next couple of years - hopefully enough to wrap up whatever storylines have been generated.

They change the focus every year anyway. Not in a bad way, but there's a definite shift in storytelling each season.

Lost would be much better to watch on DVD. We're into S4, but onscreen only about four months have passed (well we think so anyway ;)).

If you give high marks to a show for being imaginative and having wonderful, well-acted characters, and you're not overly impatient about getting some answers to those abundant and ever-proliferating mysteries, then you'll probably like Lost. DVD viewing will take care of the impatience factor anyway.

At this point, I'd call it the best sci fi series of all time. (Yes, it's booted DS9 out of the #1 slot on my list.) And one of the best series of any type of all time.

I don't think you need to worry about the factor that drove some viewers away: thinking there will be no satisfying resolution to the mysteries. They've started down a path that I think can resolve all the important mysteries perfectly well (and a good chunk of the minor ones as well).

I doubt it will be cancelled before all six planned seasons. The ratings are holding steady. Anyone who's made it this far will stick with it till the end.

I highly recommend LOST, it's a mystery-suspense-adventure-scifi series. But I would also highly recommend watching from the very first episode or else one might feel... lost.

Exactly!

Someone finds a polar bear in the Sahara and never explains it. :wtf:

Never? They just introduced it! Give them a chance, sheesh!

We probably should have this moved to the forum that discusses the show ;)

LOST is a very good show. There's a lot of suspense and mystery, but one of it's strengths is that it focuses on the characters (granted, some of the characters are annoying and you could argue that they do things that make you lose respect for them, but it's as much a character driven show as a plot driven show and I think that is one reason why it's so popular).

LOL, I actually didn't clue in about the Lost forum.

I'm getting excited about starting this - now to find the DVDs cheap close to where I live...

I hope you enjoy it as much as most of us do. It's very rewarding for those who have patience.

There is a definite end to the show coming, even if they don't 'explain' everything by then, it will be properly wrapped up.

I hope they don't explain everything, leave something there for my imagination. :)

Rygel, on the one hand it's a great show, but it can also be a very frustrating experience. I'm not sure I can in all good consience recommend it unless you have a very high tolerance for a long drawn out mystery. There's no way I would have ever started watching it (and getting hooked in the process) had I known in advance what kind of show it was. But now I'm hooked and want to see the end of the story.

If you're going to watch it, you must see it from the beginning or you will be hopelessly lost (no pun intended) and even then, you may be lost.

Well, it could also have been

The polar bears were there as animal intelligence experiments (remember, they ended up smarter than Sawyer). My guess is that the poor bear either stumbled across the transporter by accident or evolved enough intelligence to use it, but he failed to consider where it went. I guess that one wasn't too much smarter than Sawyer.

I am also realtively new to Lost....I just started on DVD 2 weeks ago. I'm on season 3 now, just finished the episode "One of Us" last night.
It's a great show....like one big Twilight Zone episode.

My only recommendation to the original poster is maybe don't pick up the DVDs for season 1 for a few more weeks....as season 4 won't be out 'til December...so if you go fast like me (2 episodes each night and 4 or 5 on Sunday)you may have to wait too long!
