The attempts of the Discovery writers to beat the material of this show to fit into other Trek continuity in ways that they imagine make sense have all the plausibility of the worst fan explanations for inconsistent canon.
That's a fact.
I did earlier. "Fanwank" is the term for what fans do when they attempt to create explanations for gaps in Canon narrative.
Here is an example of fanwank for the change in the look of the Trill from TNG to DS9:
The "bumpy-head" Trill are a subspecies of Trill who share the planet with the "spotted" Trill but are much smaller population-wise, which is why we only ever saw two of them as symbiont hosts.
That sounds like the old definition of "fanwank" common to US based websites about a decade or so ago. I know Television Without Pity was big on it in the day. I haven't seen it used since 2004, though.
However, the British definition of fanwank meaning fan service has existed since the 80s or 90s and today has become the dominant definition of the word worldwide.
Only if said explanations are unnecessary, don't make sense, or are otherwise superfluous.
If it actually WORKS - if it answers a specific question, serving the story in a meaningful way - it is not fanWANK, as such. That word carries a specific (and insulting) tone.
I post in a lot of places and I have never before seen anyone equate the term "fanwank" with the term "fanservice".
I don't know. Wank sounds classier than jerking off. Strictly IMO, of course.
My uncle has a Doctor Who book published in the early 90s which provides a definition of the term fanwank as meaning fan service. Pretty sure that outdates most stuff found online these days.
That is evidence of...absolutely nothing. Your posts in general display a pretty broad unfamiliarity with a lot of things.
Yet all the TOS characters were recast in 2009. It was so successful they made 2 sequel movies.

Nimoy Spock was crying or overly excited over something every few episodes in TOS, and not just when he was drunk, spored up, or going insane. Quinto Spock is reeling over the destruction of his homeworld in '09. If Nimoy Spock had suffered the same (well, I guess he did...), he'd be much more upset all the time. Quinto Spock should've been more "emo."
