What if Enterprise, not Defiant, was assigned to DS9?

Arpy

Vice Admiral

The Federation becomes deadly serious about protecting the station and the wormhole. The Romulans get to have an observer on the station and a cloak operator on the Federation flagship.

What would the series been like with Picard and Sisko both working together toward pursuing Bajoran membership, wormwhole exploration, and defense from the Doninion?

You'd have far too big a cast if you throw in the cast of TNG and DS9 already struggled with the main + important supporting cast it already had. So I agree with C Miller in that the inclusion of the Enterprise instead of the Defiant would be a terrible move and weaken the show. Not only would you piss off DS9 fans, but unless you gave the Enterprise mob a lot of screen time the TNG fans would be out for blood as well.

I think Sisko would not have evolved into the leader he became, if Picard and the Enterprise had been assigned to Deep Space Nine.

I was hoping for some creativity...
Then why bring up the notion that the Enterprise be assigned to Deep Space Nine?

That's only slightly more imaginative than bringing up fan-wankish questions like "What if the Borg assimilated a Founder?" or "What's stronger, a Hirogen or a Jem'Hadar?".

Bringing the Enterprise and its crew into DS9's story is just not a good idea, 'sall.

What if Riker was given his own ship and was assigned to DS9 as its protector after TNG's TV run? As in, just Riker on his own as a recurring character without Picard and co?

It would certainly mean that Ronald D. Moore would need to write a different ninth episode.

I have this image in my head of of Jadzia walking arm in arm with Data down the Promenade, a mischievous yet ancient smile on her face.

Another is of Kira in Troi's chair on the Enterprise. I imagine whenever the ship went into the Gamma Quadrant, she would be the representative from DS9 and having a dynamic working relationship with Picard.

It may just be because I've recently seen Cairo Time, and Gates McFadden and Patricia Clarkson look a lot alike, but I can see Bashir and Crusher having a romance. They work together... I find the idea of Picard being jealous of Bashir kind of funny too. It always Crusher having to get over it with Picard and Vash or Nella Daren - the reverse might have been fun, and a catalyst for Picard and Crusher finally getting on with it.

I remember a while ago someone said having Data on DS9 would be like kicking a puppy. You know, if anyone could do it and be forgiven for it, it might be Sisko.

It really doesn't work. For a lot of Niners, it's a lot to deal with when people claim it's not Trek, and that it sucked for being on a station.
By assigning the Enterprise and crew to DS9, you're basicly turning DS9 into TNG: Part 2. Do you honoustly think there is a Niner out there who would appreciate that?

I think that if you look at it in universe, its an interesting idea. It never would have worked for the show, for a variety of reasons, but for Bajor, and the Gamma Quadrant, and the Federation, there are a lot of stories and character interactions that could be explored.

- Picard as semi-regular admiral or ambassador, in charge of Federation business in the region.
- Tom Riker (and Ro?) assigned to DS9, but in a new ship. It could have been interesting to see how Picard would deal with Sisko's role in Bajoran society. Would he encourage him to use it?
Of course that would have meant Riker as a new regular, but I think that might have worked out.

I've liked the times the two crews have teamed up in the novels and the comics, but the Defiant was a great addition to the series.
