Spoilers What If...? discussion thread

It certainly gave no consideration towards people who haven't seen Captain America: The First Avenger...but I imagine everyone watching it has seen that movie anyway. The action scenes were great and I wish the movies would be as bold as that sequence with her taking out all those enemy aircraft.

She racked up quite the death toll, of course shown without any kind of gore... but still definitely killed a lot of german soldiers.

The MCU is what - PG13 for the most part? They have never shown what those shield strikes and throws can and should actually do, especially when thrown/used by a Supersoldier.

But then again that's not the MCU style, for that you'd have to watch the Netflix shows, especially Daredevil and Punisher ;)

Well, this was quite good. The story was kind of rushed, but fun, and I've rarely seen cel-shaded 3D animation look this good. The technology has finally gotten to the point where sometimes it's almost indistinguishable from traditional animation. Indeed, it looked like there were a lot of painted backgrounds, and I was impressed by how much the lighting, color, and character/action animation reminded me of the Fleischer Superman cartoons from the '40s. Whereas one or two of the animated explosions reminded me of Tokyo Movie Shinsha's work in their heyday in the '80s and '90s. They always did the best explosions. I still find it a little off-putting how fluid CGI animation is compared to cel animation (except in shows like The Dragon Prince and Pacific Rim: The Black where they deliberately reduce the frame rate to mimic 2D, usually reducing it too much), and the lines are a bit heavy for my taste, but the character animation was very expressive and subtle, really terrific work.

Josh Keaton was remarkably good as Steve. I didn't pay enough attention at the start of the credits to know whether it was Chris Evans or not, and I became convinced it actually was him. As for Atwell, it was interesting how she played Captain Carter with more fun and playfulness than Agent Carter, as if she were really rejoicing in the freedom her new power gave her. But the performance I enjoyed most was Dominic Cooper's Howard Stark, who was in full Starkian form with a perfect '40s screwball-comedy delivery on top of it.

It kind of seemed to me that Captain Carter was even more superpowered than Captain America ever was. I don't think we ever saw Steve flip a truck over his head, for example. I bet that's really going to upset a certain segment of the audience.

I found the tag scene kind of anticlimactic. It would've been nice to get some answers about what happened to Hydra Stomper Steve in the 70 years since the war. Maybe they're saving that for a sequel next season?

Should the thread title be given a spoiler flag, since we're discussing the episode specifics?
I was in awe of the animation. Gorgeous! The sunlight was especially striking in certain places.

Hayley is The Awesome! This made me miss Agent Carter even more than normal. When she flipped the truck, my hubby speculated that she is stronger because she was stronger than Steve pre-treatment.

I laughed like crazy when Howard was at the cafe window! Dom should definitely do more comedy.

This show is gonna be FUN!

No, because Captain Britain is already a different character in the comics. (Usually Brian Braddock, although sometimes his sister, Betsy Braddock.)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_Britain
My thought on that was that 1) she wasn't choosing to use a pseudonym and 2) they may or may not have plans to use Captain Britain at some point, and I honestly think they won't, so why throw the name out there? Even if I'm totally off base here, I'm sure someone thought it was better not to use CB.

Peggy using the sword and the tentacle monster just gave me huge Hellboy flashbacks. The first movie, I ment.

I enjoyed it. It felt rushed. Peggy deciding just like that to jump in the machine. Stark somehow knowing exactly how to the use the tessaract. But the animation was very well done, the action superb (wish we saw some stuff like the dogfight stuff and her using the shield to flip a truck in the movies) and the humor was well done (you nearly took my arm off). Looking forward to more.

They made a point to say that all the serum was used on Peggy, the stolen vial was replaced before the Procedure. However, that is yet another departure from the original movie since that stolen vial was never in the machine the first place in TFA.

But I think the intent was that Peggy got more of the serum than Steve did.

She got a bit brutal with one Me109 pilot.

It's the style for the actual comic books as well. You see the impact but you don't see a lot of blood or damage to the target afterwards. It fits quite well in my opinion as after all we are talking about a comic book world here.

I also agree with the others who say somehow Peggy Carter became more powerful because yeah I don't think we ever saw Steve charge a moving troop truck at 30 plus miles an hour and shield block and effectively do a suplex move to flip said truck.

Well, it's probably not unreasonable to suspect that pre-serum Peggy was physically stronger than pre-serum Steve. Therefore, post serum Peggy should also be stronger than post serum Steve.

That said, anyone capable of delivering the kick that Steve delivers to the truck here at 1:29, I could conceivably see being able to pull off what Peggy pulled off.

Yeah, Peggy was pretty much already top of the line as 1940's women went (martial arts training and all) compared to '98 lb weakling' Steve, so the serum enhanced her that much further. She took that serum/vita-ray combo without screaming or even making much noise.

Plus, as I've seen mentioned elsewhere: Steve's aware of his own strength, and tends to pull his punches around ordinary people, trying not to kill unnecessarily if he can help it. Peggy has no such compunctions, especially when it comes to Nazis.

Very solid start - i liked it.

I too felt it was a but rushed but overall it was cool. Carter going into full action with the uniform and shield was awesome and the Hydrastomper was a cool addition to keep Steve in the story and cross reference Iron Man.

Anyone felt a flashback to Hellboy when the Tentacle Monster appeared?
My mind went to Star Trek Picard.

My wife isn't big on cartoons and really has no interest in this show, so I watched it on my phone. Yesterday, while she was out, I decided to rewatch on our big snazzy 4k TV. Holy crap what a difference! The animation looked really different. Not in a bad way, but just different. The lines and movement seemed so much cleaner on the big screen.

That was a LOT of fun! Very fast paced (understandable) and a few times I felt like it could be a bit too fast paced, but everything else about it was just so nice that it didn't matter. The animation production style is lovely with all the beautiful lighting effects and nicely designed characters. The character animation itself feels a little stiff in facial expressions to me. Everything is a almost a little bit too fluid for me, but still very very cool.

And I love that Howard is essentially Varick from Legend of Korra, but for the MCU.
