What happens to other countries on Earth?

When Starfleet is created after first contact later we get the Federation, but what happens to all the countries on Earth?

Do we still have separate nations and borders or is it all one world govt? Do countries retain their autonomy?

Most countries contain smaller regions, in America we have States, counties and cites with their own governments and autonomy. So I guess it's like that.

Why not? People will always want "local" representation.

No USA. That's a pretty big thing Roddenberry managed to get away with. References are made to North America. We just don't know specifics. Countries became regions. We don't know if they're politically autonomous.

I just wish more of Earth was explored in Star Trek but no one has dared to cover much of life on Earth beyond small snippets here and there.

That's because the show is called Star Trek. In TOS, the ship never visited 23rd Century Earth.

In 2036 there will be a New United Nations, but in 2123 the (old?) United Nations still exists, suggesting they were two separate (perhaps competing?) organizations.

The united earth space probe agency dates back to 2067 and is still around in the mid-23rd century.

In 2150 there was a World Government, and United Earth existed in 2155, personally I wonder if the mentioned World Government and United Earth are the same body.

I don't consider the Federation to be a nation/state, and I think Untied Earth is probably a international organization that (among other things) speaks for Earth with one voice.

The Royal Navy still existed on 22nd century Earth, so even the British royal family are still around.
A DS 9 novel mentions the President of the USA touring San Francisco, after the Breen attack on Earth. Nation states still exist on Earth, the U.E government sounds like the United Nations but with more teeth and political power. It is probably a federalised form of government. Humans learn the hard way to work together after WWIII and First contact. Nation states stop seeing each other as political enemies. There is no 'Superpower' or 'Leader of the free world', no political dictatorships or extreme religious theocracies. (Islam would have to reform BIG time, as Christianity did in the past).
E. g Chekov is a very proud Russian; positive cultural national pride is still around, and so it should be. I would hate to think the rest of the world becomes a carbon copy USA.

Star Trek gives the impression the other planets of the Federation do not have nation states. That could be due to poor world building on the part of the writers or the plot does not need to mention the different regions, cultures and languages on Tellar, Vulcan, Andor, Bajor, Betazed, Cardessia etc

I also recall from the novel Spock's World a passage about Sarek attending an event with the POTUS, (although I think the passage stated it was largely a ceremonial role by that point).

That's actually from a short story in the Tales of the Dominion War anthology. The story tells about the Breen attack from the perspective of Picard, who is at Starfleet Command at the time of the attack, and the rest of the Enterprise crew, who are in orbit coordinating the defense.

Kirk is from Iowa
Janeway is from Indiana (and so am I, originally. She actually is from a town near where I was born).
The wreckage of The Charybdis in TNG's "The Royale" had 52 stars on the US Flag, indicating that the ship was launched between 2033 and 2079. That's still 21st century. Either the US gained (or lost) states after 2079 or the Stars and Stripes ceased to be used on official markings (perhaps due to the US ceasing to exist as a nation)

From a historical standpont the League of Nations was a united nations prior to World War 2. Since the Earth plunged into a global conflict, that organization failed it's purpose and was dissolved. Similarly, World War 3 started prior to 2036. Such a global conflict, right on the heels of the Eugenics War, would force the dissolution of the current United Nations. Can't have an organization like that if it's members are actively fighting each other. It's far more likely the New United Nations formed to replace the (old) UN much like the current UN formed to replace the League of Nations

Why? Isn't it possible the name was retained despite the Royal Family no longer being viewed as royalty?
