In Enterprise, if memory serves me correct, in either the 29th or 31st century, the Federation is no more.
It seems whoever is fighting the Temporal Cold War is either very fond of, or a successor state to the federation.
What happens? Is the Federation defeated, or goes into a regional dark age before emerging into something new? Did the Breen (or whoever) conquer the Federation, and like the Ostrogoths in Rome with Boethius and Cassiodorus, adopt the much larger and (?) and advanced culture, and saw in the former Federation something worth partially resurrecting in a new form? Or does the Federation merge with other regional blocks on a massive scale, and submerged it's political identity into something far more ambitious?
I notice San Francisco wasn't apparently nuked in the future main timeline, so that is a good sign that the Federation didn't collapse in war.... but given how many wars the Federation gets into, how horrible it's tactics are, and undoubtedly the hostility and infinite enemies it generates with it's Prime Directives (random victim civilization suffering from the cruelity of the insane prime directive: you won't give us medicine to save us, despite having it, cause you think our species is retarded and deserve to die? We might not be good at medicine, but we can make missles and weapons you know.)
Frankly, I think the Federation is a cruel, corrupt, highly inept and self righteous state, deserved to die off centuries earlier. Something happens to the point that they either finally get knocked down by someone capable of defending themselves and conquer them, or others want to join them, but the idea and cultural baggage of "The Federation" is too unappealing, and the Federation woukds admit it was a farce all along, chuck it, and embrace a new order.
I hope it was war though. I hope it collapsed in on its own hipocrisy and delusions, and that most people died as a result if its imposed, self righteous insanity. Everyone running around in city streets screaming "We deserve this, we did this to ourselves!" as a enemy fleet in space casts their shadows down below, blocking the sun, starting mass nuclear bombardment.
I would be very happy to see the Federation go. It's a terrible, closed minded, corrupt system. I saw Worf terrorize Riza in one episode, weather system went bezerk, didn't get thrown in jail, not even demoted. Planatary scale terrorism, shows up to work next episode like nothing happened. Saw Sisko make a planet uninhabitable. Heck, saw middle ranking officer Sisko, only command experience was running a space station, circumvent every admiral and ran the war, while proclaiming himself a religious prophet. Taliban isn't even that reckless. You can't tell me this Federation didn't deserve to die off. I'm happy it goes away eventually, but would like to know how, and what comes after.
