Regarding my earlier problem, it was indeed user error
Again though, it's partly due to how the UI works, and when using items like the metal detector, you have to physically take it from the inventory to interact with the detected spot, even though all you have to do is have the detector in the inventory to get a prompt that it detected anything.
I spent a lot of time on this part, because there were supposed to be 3 mines to detect and disable. But even with using the correct method, I wasn't getting anything usable and thought it had bugged out on the 3rd one, which really confused me and concerned me. Turns out though, it counted this step as completed, and so I moved on.
