Started playing The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind a couple of weeks ago, without any of the overhaul mods. I'd honestly expected that it would have aged so poorly that I wouldn't really be able to get into it after playing Oblivion and Morrowind, but the core gameplay is just so dang good.
Playing an assassin/thief isn't as much fun as in the two sequels, however; the sneaking mechanics aren't that great, and because most of the NPCs stand in one place all the time rather than sleeping or going about their daily business you don't have many options other than using spells or killing them before you rob them.
Plus, you can't join the Dark Brotherhood in Morrowind, though apparently the Morag Tong are similar; will have to check them out.
I think my favorite game to play a thief/assassin in was Oblivion. There was this one house in Bruma where a grumpy old rich man lived, and I didn't feel too bad about breaking into that curmudgeon's house and stealing his stuff. However, I was caught in the act by his bodyguard, who was apparently awake. Having no other choice, I killed him (and maybe the old man as well; I can't remember), and got a cryptic message saying "Your killing has been observed by forces unknown."
Back then, I didn't know about the Dark Brotherhood, so what happened next was a pretty wild ride for me.
