Call me stupid, but are we sure the NCC-1031 will actually be the ship's serial number? I mean, couldn't it just be a random number meant to throw us off?

Why would they want to throw us off?

If they didn't want to show the actual ship, it would have been another trailer of random space vistas.

I just hope that ST: Discovery won't be another prequel but rather a post-Voyager where the implications of the return of Voyager would be covered.
I mean, between Berman/Braga's Entreprise for TV with Scott Bakula and all movies about the adventures of a younger Capt Kirk with Chris Pine for big screen, I think it is time to go forward again BUT well, I'm afraid that the registration of the vessel AND the picture of the capitain's chair are the proof of a new prequel... Disappointed! :sigh:

(I find ironic that a show about exploring new frontiers keeps re-hashing old ground.)

Implications of the return of Voyager? My God, that would be awful.

I'd rather have 10 more prequel series.

Well, it's not because Voyager had some big weaknesses (characters and stories although there were some very good episodes) that a post-Voyager* series can't be good...

* as I liked Janeway as Capitain, I would have liked to see her as Admiral like Seven of Nine, Tuvok and the Doctor ...even if it was on rare occasion.

Where is this picture of the Captain's Chair people keep talking about? I checked all my regular Trek sites, and Fuller's and the show's Twitter accounts, and I don't see it anywhere.

Why not both era's? Janeway made comment in the (absolutely dire) anniversary episode about the old captains being nothing like her generation. What if some wacky time travel shenanigans happened - as they do - and this pre-TOS spirited cowboy of a captain ended up in the dour by the book post-Voyager era and brought some spirit with them that would rejuvenate the mission; bring wonder and awe back to what had become a routine mission?

Kind of like the Bozeman incident, but with more wacky mishaps and less Groundhog day.

Sounds like a pre tos show

Perhaps 2217_ 200 years into the future ala the original being 300 years in the future after much debate.

Can even have a character who is Kirks (or another main character) grandfather or grandmother...perhaps a ship sent to uncharted territory far from the federation that in tos time is part of the feds

If this is the aftermath of the Dominion War, I can imagine an old ship being taken out of mothballs to supplement a decimated Star Fleet.

Another idea occurred to me..... What if the ship is from another time line, and is now stranded in the Prime time line? Something like the situation in 2009's JJTrek.

I recall a term from a Trek novel-"time line orphan". Which the Spock-from-Prime was in JJTrek. He was, in effect, an exile from his original time line. And ended up making his home in the Kelvin Time Line.

I believe the suggestion was that the number is fake and is a hint, not the ship design. The ship is undoubtedly real.

As far as it being a hint it could mean anything really. It could mean the ship comes from some time between Kelvin and Ent 1701. Or it could mean 1031 run through some obscure algorithm would indicate the setting. Also how does this all mix with the "new crews" blurb from the earlier teaser.

I'm guessing that the ship itself is TMP era. So many cues from that time frame. The ship itself may have been from an even earlier time frame, but refit in TMP era.

However, I think there is some misdirection by Fuller. It's almost too obvious. Why make it seem obvious even though he clearly isn't allowed to tell us the setting or other specifics right now?

I do think it's a ship run by an undercover organization with a secret base (Section 31). It's probably set post-Nemesis. The ship itself has probably been highly modified internally to have the latest sensing equipment.

Given the serial nature of the show, there probably is some ongoing mystery the ship has to solve. To solve it, they need a ship with special capabilities, which are not necessarily combat related. So, they use an older ship but install the latest sensors and scientific equipment. I wouldn't be surprised if it has a cloaking device as well.

Need to think like a Vulcan on this one. Logically there is only one period this can be set in. Brian fuller has said that it will be set in the prime universe so this means to keep all the TOS and Nu'Trek fans at bay it has to be set in the 2220's a decade before the Kelvin timeline where the prime universe is still unchanged. I know we cant go on registry numbers to give an accurate date but the kelvin in 2233 looked a tired workhorse ship of the fleet. I would say she was built about 2210 and the discovery looks more like an early heavy cruiser built about 2220. the only points i would say is the font/lettering on the ship is very Nu'Trek/TMP Era and the deflector looks very TMP'ish but they said its still a work in progress so we will have to wait and see

An idea put forth on reddit postulated that the series takes place in the 31st century. essentially Brian Singers idea for a fall of the federation series. If the ship and crew are from the past that would account for the design of the ship. it also might be why they hired Rod Roddenberry, since I assume he has control over the Andromeda series IP, which is very similar.

I would suggest that hull and space frame were post Kelvin/pre TOS. Mothballed, then taken out for the Dominion War, the ship would have been upgraded with more modern additions.
