What DON’T you like about the show?

I don't think a reference counts as a joke. It's not funny, it's just something for us to go "Oh, I get that!" so we can get a little dopamine hit. There's a lot more potential in a show like this than just references and to me, it feels like Mike McMahan is just flexing his Trek knowledge.

Yeah, that's one of my main annoyances. They're often not even used cleverly; they're just random namedropping of relatively obscure events. My partner's a relatively casual fan and she doesn't get most. To viewers like her, they're just nonsensical lines which make the show harder to watch.

Meh, obscure references relatively few will get is the kind of humour Family Guy's been specializing in for twenty years and it's one of television's most popular shows. So what if Lower Decks wants to do something similar just with Star Trek trivia? For the die hard fans like me, it makes for quite the fun experience.

I find the fan service and fun Easter eggs to be the BEST part of the show. The plots and most of the characters could be taken or left as far as I’m concerned. But the rapid-fire fanwank is a thing of joy as far as I’m concerned.

I already have no great love for fanservice just on principle. I especially dislike it when people insist on calling it fanwank. :barf2:

Jury's still out. It's an ok show. It's the strongest of TV's Kurtzman Treks. But that alone doesn't necessarily make it worth my continued commitment.

Well hey, good for you. Principles and such.... Fascinating.

Then none of these shows are probably for you.

“More comedic”? It's a full-on comedy. It's not meant to be taken too seriously at all.

I agree, though, that the lightning-fast dialog filled with as much Trek in-jokes per second as possible could be toned down just a tad. Other than that I'm still pretty surprised how much I like the show, the setting, the characters, the style and the humor.

Yes, it's comedic, parodic, and all that, but I can only take it in small doses because it becomes a bit tiresome after a time.

I'm not really a fan of how referential it is. I get it, McMahan loves TNG and we live in pretty creatively bankrupt times, but the constant references and fan service is getting a bit much. Obviously some of that is great, but I think he takes it a step too far.

I'm a fan of the show, and I don't disagree - too much or extreme fanservice can be a bad thing. The show is still partial homage, partial parody, but by and large done with the right tone, spirit, has some originality in expanding on established lore in a new way (e.g. "second contact, which would have been great for a fully serious incarnation of the franchise), and mixture of comedy and seriousness. That, and I like some goofiness too (like that's a shock ). I hope seasons 2 and 3 don't change the format as LD got a very strong start.

I would prefer it be a little cleaner to introduce kids to Star Trek, but one hopes Prodigy may fit the bill.

There's no reason any of the existing incarnations, which did attract children at the time despite a lot more episodes/content being clearly adult-themed, can't be used - just because they aren't drawn animated cels?

I am definitely trying. I think the fun quotient is what would attract the kids.

What I don’t like is that it’s not that funny nor does it try to mine the humor from perfectly normal, established situations, which can easily be funny when someone isn’t taking their show as seriously as PIC or DSC showrunners.
