Specifically, his Buffy and Marvel dialogue is constant media references. It's just it's ALL STAR TREK!
I haven’t clicked with each episode being totally separate from the previous. Why can’t there be an overall storyline?
Probably so. And he likes irritating Freeman. And since he's the guy who makes those decisions he always get his way.
And now it’s clear why. Even your standard Cartoon Network show has an overall storyline, even when episodes are mostly self contained.
TNG was episodic. McMahan who runs the show likes TNG. I trust it's obvious why Lower Decks is episodic.
What I don't like is the constant fast paced shouting and screaming. I guess some "overacting" is required in a cartoon show, but this is just too much. Good thing that the episodes are only 25 minutes long, any minute longer would give me a real headache. Another thing is Mariner's obvious disrespect for Starfleet. Why doesn't she quit her job if she doesn't want to be there? Maybe she will find her role in future episodes and stop her annoying behavior. One last thing ... the "humor" is not funny at all. They really need to work on that!
Agreed on the people talking way too fast. Mariner doesn’t quit because she’s actually good at what she does, but ... Spoiler: “Moist Vessel” ... as per moist wessel, she doesn’t want to be promoted either (but I suspect she’ll change her mind sooner or later). Actually I like a lot the episodic nature of the show: I hate that on the new series (especially Picard) most episodes have no beginning or end, becoming a perpetual “middle” with no resolution. They are still referencing stuff that has happened in previous episodes relatively often, so it’s not 100% episodic like TOS or even TNG, where you could often watch in almost any order without noticing, as things go I like this kind of balance.
Beckett fetishizes Starfleet just as much as Boimler. Replace 'Starfleet' with 'Star Trek'. Dear Bradward is the guy who's like "KIrk or Picard? Both! And Janeway? Do it! If Sisko can live with it so can I! And gazelles are awesome! Every episode is the best episode. Star Trek, Star Trek, Star Trek! IDIC LLAP and for God's sake, there are four lights!" Completely losing all sense of perspective in the process. While Becket is the fan who's more like "The Motion Picture"? More like the Motionless Picture. Amiright? Khan's chest looks so fake. And Ceit Alpha Six just blew up? Puuu-lease. And who the hell is going to take Reverend Jim as a Klingon seriously?" And yet week after week and year after year she tunes in to ever episode and goes to see every movie. And pretty much gobbles up every bit of Star Trek-related content she can find. She wouldn't actually do that if she didn't like it.
I understand that, but it doesn't feel like the right call. I hope this changes, if the series is renewed for a 3rd season. Serialised storytelling gives episodes a time and place. Yesterday's episode lacked that, because Mariner and Brad suddenly have hundreds of stories to tell about their adventures together... When just a few episodes earlier, they're still getting to know each other.
I think you must have misunderstood, because they are firmly establishing Boimler and Mariner knowing each other for a year right from the get-go.
Boimler is her co-worker in "Second Contact" but not friend. Mind you, I don't think that's hard to believe after she STABBED him. So he easily prepares to phaser her and believe she's dealing weapons. It's at the end of the episode they become friends.
