What do you want to see in Star Trek 4?

It would be tragic for the franchise if they don't make another one. This group is just starting to hit their stride.
I wouldn't go that far.

Urban and Quinto were good from the start. Saldana's O.K., the rest were miscast.

Pine's getting a bit better, Cho and Yelchin were at best forgettable and Pegg is....

You don't like Pegg?
God no.

For the record, I'm a bit of a fan - the Cornetto trilogy's great and I like a lot of his other stuff, but I think he was bad casting choice for Scotty.

Sadly, despite my high hopes, I thought his script for Beyond was stylistically indistinguishable from the previous two, so no to that too.

Well, it's the low road or the high road. There's no in between.

Either Paramount goes gangbusters and cough up something like $225m for a multi-crew story or we get a smaller movie for $125m.

My Klingon idea from earlier in the thread would work just fine at 100-120 mil.. Have a lengthy, but smaller scale 1x1 ship battle in the middle act and maybe end it with Kirk fighting the Klingon captain hand to hand, and then use the rest of the screentime on a better story and character stuff. I'm surprised there wasn't a significant budget cut on this one being that Into Darkness underperformed somewhat.

That's odd. I thought that Into Darkness was a success.

It was, but from what I remember people were talking about how the studio was expecting it to be a massive hit (more than it was) at the time it was out.

As I recall, Paramount was expecting it to make upwards of $100 million opening weekend. And it opened the week after Iron Man 3 - which it knocked out of first place, mind you.

You can call something anything, but it's not an informed opinion and the retorts generally came back showing the real numbers.

I think Beyond salvages the most important qualities for the franchise, Kirk is a capable hero who wins despite the odds, he wins in great part because of the tremendous skill and determination of his crew, they all win despite being cut off from the fleet, and actually save those they are cut off from. Kirk finally becomes the person we were promised by Pike so long ago in Star Trek, he is no longer a hero purely by fiat.

I would like to see a movie which keeps the same production team from Beyond and focuses on Starfleet as a whole in some way. Kirk and company are always the only ship, the only crew, in a dire situation, even if it makes no sense for them to be on their own. For once, why not have Kirk with the support of other ships from the fleet and for them not to die just to show how strong the threat is, but actually do as well, or at least almost as well, as Kirk. That's really not a story in itself, but it puts emphasis on team work beyond those who are immediate friends, which I think is something worth showing.

It might have to be limited to one other ship though, since the budget will likely be smaller than Beyond. It is also more likely we will see Kirk still doing the 5 year mission, meaning the Enterprise is on its own again. But, there are reasons why he could be made to return, such as a semi-annual fleet exercise. Also considering the numbers of extras, and complexity of Yorktown, maybe a couple of other ships wouldn't be too hard.

Actually, going with the idea of a fleet exercise, neighboring nations might be invited to join, and perhaps the local fleets of member worlds would join too. It could be a chance to see ships with friendly all alien crews like the Andorians, or make the Gorn friendly in this time line. The obvious idea is to sabotage things to break up the friendly gettogether, so don't go with that. Instead, what if a group takes it as a chance to invade the Federation. The practice battle is used as an ambush to get in close while combat systems are rigged for mock battle.

Nice review.

Somewhere I posted that I'd like to see a fully operational Enterprise overcome overwhelming odds within a larger scope, such as a fleet configuration, without being hobbled. An example I gave is the Battle of Midway where one U.S. Carrier was sunk and all four Japanese carriers were sunk. I gave that example not to suggest it literally but to say you can still have drama even if yours is not the ship that sinks. Enterprise is all too often hobbled for the convenience of the story.

I like your idea. It sounds a little like an international incident in the mode of a possible North Korea scenario, and would be topical.

The foreign gross was up, but the domestic gross was down. The hope at the time was that Into Darkness would improve upon Star Trek 2009 given how well that film was received, but that didn't happen. Star Trek 2009 was a ceiling for the franchise.

I know that critics liked the first one better.

They also preferred Into Darkness to Beyond. As, apparently, did the general movie going audience. Perhaps being "the most TOS-like" film wasn't the best strategy.

Rather than what I want to see, I'd rather put forth a challenge to the production team: figure out how to make something like TMP into an action-adventure summer blockbuster — i.e. high-concept science fiction with all the daring, escapes and large set pieces.
