What do you want to see in Star Trek 4?

If they continue to parallel major aspects of the original movies, Star Trek 4 will probably involve Time Travel and lots of humor. I'm on board for humor. But please, no time travel yet.

The idea I was toying with was Mudd doing something to set off a conflict between Kirk and one of the traditional adversaries. With Kirk begrudgingly having to protect him because he's a Federation citizen. Shouldn't be slap stick. Should have real tension and drama. But just sprinkle in a little Mudd to add some levity.

Wouldn't say no to this. It's high time we saw a fleet battle with Klingons/Romulans with the new A dishing out some punishment instead of getting her arse kicked.

I liked what they did with Beyond. I also liked how Frakes handled First Contact. But remember what that same team followed it up with.
"Same team?" Aside from Frakes directing, Insurrection had a different team than First Contact. FC's script was written by Ron Moore and Brannon Braga, Insurrection's by Michael Piller.

I'm leaning more towards a 1 : 1 ship conflict like TWOK or Balance of Terror with evenly matched opponents. Maybe even do a nuTrek version of one of TOS/DS9 Klingon characters Kang, Kor or Koloth.

I'd like that also. At least it would get the budget down.

Something very different. Bearing in mind it's got to cater for current box office requirements, I'd still like to see it slower and a little more thoughtful. No motorbikes or hyper unrealistic hand to hand combat.

I'd hoped for some of that with Pegg writing Beyond, but he delivered a script stylistically inseparable from the previous two.

So for me, no Pegg, no JJ, nothing overly fantastic. A more grounded movie please.

Edit - Frakes and Ron Moore ? Works for me.

Not necessary what I want, yet what has become the trend over the past five movies - there will be a villian with a vendetta and a super weapon.

I agree with you in principal as I'm a huge fan of the older films, but the reason that Beyond turned out the way it did was because the previous two movies were very successful changing the old style of Trek movie after the franchise ground to a halt, so they were just building on that formula. I don't believe the general blockbuster movie audience want 'slower' or 'more thoughtful' even if you or I do.

I see two types of Trek emerging moving forward now - action blockbuster movie trek and slower more thoughtful TV trek.

Daystrom. Even if just a bit part. I wouldn't mind if they gender-swapped or even ethnic-swapped the role. But I'd rather they kept him (or her) black, in homage if nothing else.

A slow and thoughtful movie wouldn't fly, but a summer blockbuster that paid some attention to slow and thoughtful might.

Just a better thought out premise for the movie, believable motivation, a pause in the build up, a few more character moments, slightly slower cuts in the action scenes, a personal motivation or two rather than saving the world every time.

Imagine Wrath of Khan if it was made today. Even using the same script, it would be a different film, certainly a bit more hectic.

But it could be both a blockbuster AND thoughtful.

And not blowing up or otherwise killing the antagonist for a change. Kick his butt. Take away whatever peril he represents and send him home licking his wounds.

That already happened in Into Darkness. They kicked Khan's butt and didn't kill him or blow him up. He's still alive and sleeping.

It's more like what I DON'T want to see. I don't want to see another revenge driven villan-of-the-week type antagonist. I don't want time travel. I don't want to see Kirk's dad. I don't want to hear the Beastie Boys or Public Enemy.

If ST4 gets made at all, I think it will have to be a smaller story with less action because I can't imagine them not cutting the budget. This will be a good thing IMO.
