What do you think would have happened to Worf if Tasha Yar never left the show?

I think iit would have hurt the character because being a security chief seems to be the perfect job for that character. I do think he proably would have took over helm when they made Geordi the chief engineer, which is better than just having him stand in the background but making him a pilot would just feel weird. I even wonder if he might have been written off the show. I wasn't a fan of Trek back when the show starts so I am kind of curious as to how popular the character was when the show was just starting.

He'd have become the Chief Flight Control Officer (and most likely remained a Lieutenant j.g. for a season or two longer) who probably would've covered Ops or Tactical whenever there was an away team sent down to a planet, probably going on a few as well when a little extra muscle was needed. He still would've have his fling with K'Ehleyr and produced Alexander only to have lost her and become a single father, discovered he had a brother who was an Imperial officer, let his family be dishonoured for the good of the Empire then cleared its name during the Klingon Civil War, been paralysed and contemplated suicide, gone off to learn whether his father was still alive on a Romulan prison camp or not, and brought about the restoration of Kahless as the Emperor, seeing as how all of Worf's major storylines had absolutely nothing to do with him being Security Chief but rather him being a Klingon.

Unfortunately, we might never have gotten Ro Laren if this were the case unless she was in another role (science officer Ro perhaps?) which might've made things a little different for DS9 but I'm sure the good writers on TNG at the time would've found a way to slot her in and shake things up, as well as set up the backstory for the next series. Wesley would also have been relegated to jumping between the aft stations, or maybe assigned as Geordi's sidekick in engineering, but either of those options makes more sense for a science/engineering 'genius' rather than stuck at the conn all day (especially over the commissioned officers who earned the right to sit at the helm).

I always assumed Worf would have become chief engineer if Tasha had stayed. He didn't have a specific position on the ship so why not move him to engineering instead of switching two characters to different positions?

My take is that Tasha would have taken a different position, with Worf taking over security. A big bold and brash Klingon is a bit more "fitting" for the role. Species-ism? I liked how Tasha served as a tactical officer in Yesterday's Enterprise. She could have migrated to such a role.

I would have loved to see Yar though in the Pillar years. She could have been the Ro Lauren before we even got that character. Her background and personality would lend itself to conflict which of course would help storytelling. I also think Pulaski would have been unnessary since she ws brought in to add conflict. Plus I would have loved to see how Data and Yar interacted. Would you have potential romance between them? How would that have impacted the Data chatacter.

It seems likely the klingon contraceptives would most likely kill a human being well before it had to fight any mauve sperm... Yes, I'm thinking of violently territorial spermicidal tape worms as birth control, so why arn't you?

Klingon pregnancies are short, so it's just a question of the refractory time, if these too ####happy kids can't keep their hands off each other... Tasha could spend decades waiting for a space in her reproductive cycle, before she's in a position to resume her duties.

On the plus side, pregnancy strength, and it's unlikely that most no good niks are going strike a preggers Tasha if she tries to bar their egress, which equates to practically a force field, so maybe Picard's security force should only be nothing but knocked up folk?

That's assuming Tasha ever wanted kids in the first place. Her life on Turkana IV may have turned her off the notion of ever having children of her own.

Maybe a safe abortion was hard to come by in an alt universe Romulan prison camp, however I can really see Romulus having genetic purity laws, although how a Romulan Prefect would deal with an illegal hybrid that wasn't his own daughter, would be the execution of Mother and father months before their child falls out.

Denise Crosby was not a very experienced actor at the time. I think her talent shortcomings were a bit obvious in some episodes. Her best work, IMHO, was in Yesterday's Enterprise. So keeping that in mind, I do think it was best that she left the show. And her availability to return as a Romulan/Human half-breed was brilliant and she pulled off that role pretty well.

It depends on how much they'd gotten invested in the Yar character. She'd have remained as Chief of Security, but how much plot would get thrown her way is questionable. Data had Ops locked up. I don't see them opting for Worf over Geordi for chief engineer. I could see them posting him to conn more regularly, but for some reason they really doubled down on having Wes be at the helm a lot, so it would be a part time job at best

They had limited the amount of bridge positions too much to accommodate that whole season 1 cast. I always thought it was a mistake to combine the duties of security & tactical. Had they split those roles, I could see Worf assuming one, while Tasha held the other. Chief of ship's security probably wouldn't ordinarily go on away missions, and Tactical might not be in charge of the old communications officer duties, etc... There was plenty of room on that upper deck to have them both up there, Maybe one of them working from a rear wall terminal

If they'd perhaps added some swing arm consoles on the outer chairs of that command arch, I could see them posting Data there in a purely science officer capacity, & putting someone like Worf up front at Ops. To be honest, the ship's counselor doesn't need to be sitting at command anyhow. She could just roam around, or sit on that end cap, like Bev use to do now & then. They also could've kept the old school Helm & Nav posts up front like the Constitution class, & had Data at the command arch, with Picard & Riker, in the Ops/2nd officer post.

Wherever Worf landed, it would surely have been a lot less integral a role for the character, unfortunately, & had Tasha remained, we certainly would never have gotten Ro Laren

Ha! I'm picturing the version where the Data/Yar thing simmers at a low boil for the entire series, Picard/Bev & Riker/Troi style, until it suddenly zags into Yar/Worf in the last season. A whole new relationship fanbase to piss off!

That's also the only way to make odd-man-out Geordi more comically sad and hopeless in the romance department than the Geordi we got.

I get a chuckle out of picturing the workaround if Denise Crosby had gotten pregnant and they didn't want to write it into the show. Similar to B'Elanna, Yar would suddenly have concluded a flowy, oversized "Security Jacket" was the perfect accessory for dangerous away missions.

The idea of splitting security functions between Worf and Yar is a good one, it would have worked perfectly. Trek shows have always been great at making the crew positions suit whatever they want the regular characters to be, and presenting it in a way that you just go with it. TNG needed a regular conn officer until they didn't, TNG and VOY didn't have science officer's, DS9 doesn't have an ops person, until Worf shows up and is hand-waved into "Strategic Operations Officer", whatever that is. DS9 really was the best at this: they spent all of one line justifying suddenly having a Counselor (war stress building up, so we need more therapy or something), and zero lines addressing who replaced Jadzia as science officer (I suppose we were to infer that the fleet was stretched thin and some positions would go unfilled). And yet, it didn't bother me at all, and I feel like I never see anyone else complaining about it.
