Hypothetically, if we went back to that universe 16 years later where would the characters be?

Sisko - Based on him saying he'd be back "maybe tomorrow, maybe a year from now" I think he came back pretty soon after the finale and moved to Bajor with Kasidy and their child. He's probably still a religious icon to the Bajoran people.

Kira - I think she'd have commanded DS9 for a few years but I don't think Kira would be interested in a life in Starfleet. The episode Rapture indicated the Bajoran Militia would be integrated into Starfleet so I think she probably went down a more political route in her career. No doubt she'd continue to visit DS9 in her role as First Minister

Bashir - DS9 was his first assignment. I never saw him staying there for the rest of his career. He either got a job at Starfleet Medical and reunited with O'Brien or transferred to a ship as chief medical officer.

Ezri Dax - No way did she and Bashir stay together. I think (and I'm told in the novels) they split up. Ezri was very new to the joined Trill process. After a few years I think she'd be influenced by the experiences of previous hosts and transfer to command (this also happens in the novels, I believe). I'm unsure if she'd stay on DS9. Perhaps she'd try to move up the ranks on a starship.

O'Brien - Still happily married to Keiko and teaching at Starfleet Academy. I really don't see it any other way.

Quark - Like O'Brien, I can't see Quark anywhere else but at his bar on the station.

Jake - This is a strange one because I think Jake as a character would benefit from not having his father around for a few years. I could see him leaving DS9 and travelling the galaxy as a reporter to gain experience for his writing. Perhaps Jake leaves before Ben returns and is not within reach of communication.

Odo - Very difficult to say. Who can know if Odo felt at home in the Great Link. Maybe he did his job and changed their perception of solids and then went back to Kira. Or maybe he felt so at home in the Great Link he never left it.

Worf - It looked like he was serving on the Enterprise again in Nemesis so it clearly didn't work out with him being the Federation ambassador to Qo'Nos. I think Worf would have become Picard's first officer after the departure of Riker and the death of Data. Assuming the ship would still be in service I'm sure Worf is still there.

Sisko returns to Kasidy and his newborn son, Lucious Shaft Sisko. He kicks Jake out of the house on Bajor, telling him to "get a job." Kasidy gets sick of his "holier than thou" attitude (because he's a Prophet), and they agree to an amicable separation. After running as the "Hope AND War" candidate, he becomes Kai. But he gets bored, and he returns to the Wormhole, where he plays Magic: The Gathering with his friends all day. The Prophets tire of Cajun cuisine.

I never read the novels that came after, so this is all just personal opinion.

Sisko: I always felt he would return. Time is irrelevant to the Prophets, so I have the feeling that from Sisko's perspective, he might have stayed with them and learned much from them, but returned after a relatively short time. But once he did return, I don't see him remaining a starfleet officer, but finally taking up his mantle of Emissary. So, I see Sisko retiring from Starfleet, and living on Bajor as he mentioned, along with Cassidy, and raising their child (which is also part Prophet).

Kira: Remains in command of DS9, and I believe eventually Bajor became part of the Federation. Kira at that point would have received a permanent starfleet commission as commander or captain, whatever is the best equivalent to a Bajoran Colonel would be.

Worf: I think he would have ended up either on the Enterprise-E or the Titan. Later on, I can see him an XO, maybe captain, years later. I actually do not see him in the Klingon military.

Bashir: I think he would have been reassigned. Seems like every "hero" doctor ends up teaching at Starfleet Medical sooner or later.

Ezri Dax: I see her being reassigned, maybe a ship councilor, and I don't think her and Bashir stay together all that long, after she realizes she needs to live her own life, and not Jadzia's.

Obrien: I see him moving back to Earth, possibly to Starfleet academy, possibly retiring altogether.

Quark: He is the DS9 Bartender. He always has been the bartender.

Odo: In the Great Link for the foreseeable future.

Jake: becomes a journalist covering various events all over.

Sisko: Returns for the birth of his daughter, Jadzia, but vanishes again shortly after, only returning a few years later when a doomsday-esque prophecy threatens Bajor. He remains in this reality for a while after that, retired from Starfleet and living on the planet. Kasidy keeps flying her freighter, leaving him to bond with their daughter and reconnect with Jake.

Kira: When Bajor enters the UFP and the Militia folds into Starfleet, she becomes Captain of DS9, a post she holds for several years up until she went off to explore her pagh. During the doomsday incident she vanished without a trace, something Sisko seems to know more about than he lets on.

Worf: Remains the Federation Ambassador to the Klingon Empire. His time in uniform on the E-E was just for when he was on leave from his official duties for the wedding, he returned to the Embassy soon after.

Bashir: He and Dax marry, though have an amicable split after a few years. He remains on DS9 for several years before taking up a post on Cardassia Prime, then moves on to work with helping other genetically enhanced humans.

Dax: After the divorce she takes another posting for a few years, onboard a ship that heads into the Gamma Quadrant on a long-term mission of exploration. When its over, she returns to DS9 for a time.

O'Brien: He teaches on Earth for a decade before moving with Keiko to a fledgling colony in need of a lead botonist and he becomes an engineer there. Molly enrolls at Starfleet Academy.

Odo: Remains with the Great Link, helping to educate them and reorganise the Dominion. He only returns to the Alpha Quadrant a couple of centuries after he left.

Quark: He manages to franchise Quark's, which sees him bring in vast amounts of latinum. Coupled with a couple of profitable deals, he is finally able to buy a small moon for himself.

Jake: He stays by Kasidy's side throughout her pregnancy and Jadzia's early years, before a book he writes makes it big and he becomes a household name. He meets and marries a nice Bajoran woman and begins his own family.

I've long thought that the Cardassian reconstruction and rebirth would make a great spinoff series...

Shortly after the war ends, Bajor finally joins the Federation. Kira decides not to join the ranks of Starfleet, and instead leads the Federation's diplomatic envoy to Cardassia, where she plays a large role in helping Cardassia's rebirth as a more peaceful, positive player in the Alpha Quadrant -- leading eventually to formal reparations with Bajor. This will become Kira's legacy.

Her partner in this effort is Elim Garak, who is elected as a member of Cardassia's legislative body. He quickly becomes a leader in the body, and is the lead author of Cardassia's new constitution -- one that emphasizes freedom, culture, and civilian rule over military might and aggression. Eventually, he is urged to run for the presidency, but declines, having tired of politics.

Bashir also takes an assignment on Cardassia as the lead of Starfleet Medical's humanitarian mission, where he discovers all sorts of medical atrocities that were committed by the Dominion behind closed doors. He spends the rest of his career and life on Cardassia, having married a Cardassian woman and having a daughter.

After about a year, Odo returns from the Great Link to begin formal negotiations with the Federation for a long-term peace treaty. But it becomes clear that Odo has changed. While he still genuinely wants the Dominion to foster peace instead of war, the Great Link has also had an influence on him. He has learned much more about the atrocities that they've suffered in the past at the hands of solids, and struggles to fully trust the Federation's representatives. As the peace talks are falling apart on DS9, Ambassador Kira arrives to remind Odo of the love he once knew. But as they are about to reunite on the promenade, a Cardassian assassin, seeking revenge for the devastation of his planet, murders Odo right in front of her eyes.

The funeral for Odo, however, brings the Federation, Bajorans, Cardassians, and Dominion closer together, as they are bonded by their mutual respect and mourning for Odo. Within days, an historic alliance is formalized between them, ushering in an era of peace and cooperation between the two sides of the wormhole.

10 years later, a new space station is built on the other side of the wormhole. In the grand tradition of DS9, it is run in partnership between the Dominion and the Federation. A vorta commands the station, with Commander Nog as her first officer and Federation liaison. Jake Sisko takes up residence as a reporter and writer. Quark opens a second bar on the new station. And Garak, having retired from politics on Cardassia, also takes up residence as Cardassia's liaison.

The ribbon cutting ceremony for the new station, is attended by many of DS9's old crew and residents, including Ben Sisko, who returns from the Wormhole the day of with Kai Opaka. The prophets sent Sisko to free Opaka from the moon on which she was stranded, as it was their intent for Opaka to be the new Emissary. Together, Sisko and Opaka return to Bajor, where Sisko retires in peace with Kassidy and their child. Opaka's work is focused on preserving Bajor's cultural and religious identity within the Federation -- something they've been struggling with since joining.

And all lived happily ever after...

Sisko fought a cosmic battle on a higher plane then came back and retired as a human with Kasidy and his kids.

O'Brien retired happy with his family as a teacher on Earth.

Nog became a Captain and had a long prosperous Starfleet career before dying heroically to save a planet.

Odo stayed with the link for the next several hundred years before being the representative to negotiate an alliance with the Federation against the Borg.

Bashir had a few good years of marriage with Ezri until he left as the CMO on the first manned mission to the Andromeda galaxy.

Kira commanded the station for several years and retired, playing a key role in the integration of Bajor with the Federation.

Ezri became a counselor at Starfleet Academy then her son rebelled against Starfleet in anger for his father leaving the galaxy and joined his grandparents in the private sector.

Rom plunged the Ferenginar economy into financial chaos and gained asylum on Earth to avoid being hung from the tower of commerce. There he became a non-com engineer for Starfleet.

Quark tended bar.

Dax #12 set the basis for 29th century time travel technology and basically caused the temporal cold war.

I forgot Jake. I suppose, he writes a few famous books then retires to spend his whole life looking for his father. Ben Sisko returns when he steals the orb of time to try to reset the timeline to one where his father doesn't leave, to spank him.

One by one they each ventured to the fire caves to search for Sisko, and basically fell in.

There's a small plack with all their name on it mounted to a wall on the prominade, it's completely ignored and the replacement crew on DS9 don't really know who they were (except Sisko).

I agree on the novels, I thought they were pretty well done. I kept up through Unity, but haven't stuck with them since. I liked most of the new characters, and enjoyed the return of Ro Laren. My only complaint was that so many of the books were tie-ins with other separate series or anthologies (Section 31, Gateways, etc.). So at times it seemed fractious. But the kickoff duology, Avatar, the Mission Gamma quadrilogy, and especially the mostly-standalone Rising Son were all splendid.

Sisko - I see him coming back to visit about as often as the prophets visited him in seasons 6-7, but not becoming a regular corporeal human again.

Jake - stays on DS9, helps Kasidy during her pregnancy and his sister's babyhood, dates and perhaps marries, writes the history of the Dominion War as no one else can.

Kira - dusts off her Starfleet uniform and pins on an admiral's insignia, commanding Starfleet's Bajoran sector.

Dax - with the war over, there's less need of a counselor on DS9, so she goes to a planet or starship.

Bashir - since DS9 is no longer the frontier where heroes are made, serves a tour on a starship on an exploration mission and then goes to a research institution on earth where he can hang out with O'Brien in his off hours.

Nog - Federation ambassador to the Ferengi Alliance. What's wrong with a little nepotism?

Quark - tending that worthless little bar for the rest of his life. But on the bright side, with Odo gone the opportunities for side business are much greater.

Rom - against all expectations, implements many reforms and avoids a coup.

Odo - after a long time in the Link, becomes Dominion representative to the Federation. Visits Admiral Kira on the way back and forth between the Link and Earth as often as possible.

Kasidy - takes a year off from being freighter captain, but when her daughter is a year old resumes going on runs, and takes her daughter with her.

Garick - new head of the Obsidian Order. Spends his free time trying to travel back in time to the 1960s so he can join MI6.

O'Brien - teaching at Starfleet Academy.

Worf - ambassador to the Klingon Empire. Looks up Grilka, now that he's no longer in disgrace.

I haven't given it too much thought on the entire cast but:

I always wanted Worf to end up commanding the Enterprise-E, which is still operating into the early 25th Century.

I don't really want to see Kira in a Starfleet position full time but neither in some boring Bajoran bureaucrat role, so not sure what she's doing.

I think Quark absolutely has to be manning that bar forever after but he's got more piece of mind now and likes his role on the station.

Garak walks alone into the sunset and is never heard again, except for tales told to young cardassians about damar's obsidian order lieutenant, but no one knows his name.

The Cardassians don't join the Federation but we see cardassian officers joining starfleet and serving on starships.

Sisko and Odo are never seen again.

Sisko returns in time for his child’s birth, a daughter Jadzia Sisko.

Kira joins starfleet when Bahri joins the Federation and becomes Captain of DS9 and as Bahri becomes a major port for exploration of the Alpha and Gamma Quadrants she gets promoted to Admiral and is one of the doers who gets stuff done.

Ezri Dax becomes Captain of the Aventine

Bashir tries to infiltrate Section 31 to ultimately bring them down.

Worf rejoins starfleet after a term as Ambassador to become JLP’s XO before becoming Enterprise Captain.

Nog ends up becoming Captain of his own ship attached to the Starfleet Corp of Engineers

I never gave a lot of thought about the characters specific endings but really enjoyed the Bajorians, Cardassians, Ferengi, Breen being fleshed out.

I see Bajor joining the Federation within a decade or less after the events of the DS9 and within a single generation becoming a highlighted world in the Federation with the plucky attitude akin to a 22nd century Earth.

Cardassia I see as a work in progress reforming empire that needs to build itself up from the ashes. The Federation would offer a ton of assistance over the coming decades in an attempt to keep a power vaccum being taken advantage of by the Breen, who I see as the next threat on the horizon for the Federation, along with perhaps a less than stable or divided Romuluan empire.

Cardassia joining the Federation would be the ulimate coup to make the alliance the unquestioned top dog of nearly half the galaxy with cooperation and adherence to base level morality being favored over violence and domination.

The Ferengi I see as unreformable and Rom would have neither the intellect or wit to maintain his hold on power in Ferenginar for long. But I do see Nog as influencing a few enterprising Ferengi from joining Starfleet to pursue goals outside of the traditional profit motive. That cultural influence would likely lead to a lot of peace between Ferengi and the Federation but the Breen are a looming threat and the Ferengi could quasia-ally itself with the Breen as a non-aligned world to supply the Breen economy for profit while maintaining the integrity and independence of the Ferengi Alliance.

I like many of these ideas -- Sisko returning in non-corporeal form, appearing to Kasidy and their daughter Jadzia as well as Jake. Kira as admiral - that works. Odo as Dominion envoy to the Federation--isn’t he too curmudgeonly for that? But visiting Kira as often as possible, that’s cool. Worf seeking out Grilka – why not. Bashir and O’Brien still getting together to hang out - totally. Quark keeps the bar going – and, can afford to add a few holosuites. Vic Fontaine's lounge continues to stay open 26 hrs/day and he finally builds that new casino Nog drew up for him.

In before the necro close to say I'm fine with what they did with them in the pre-2380 novels before those definitely broke off into the Coda timeline and then i Star trek Online.

We do know from Discovery season 3 that Nog made enough of a name for himself (presumably as a captain) to get a ship named after him.

Given that life among the Prophets is effectively timeless, Sisko could exist among them through history, witness the Big Bang, watch the Big Chill, and still be home in time to hold his and Kassidy's baby over his head and enjoy listening to the giggles. He retires quietly to a small house on Bajor, his work done, and secure in the knowledge that history can unfold without his help. He does periodically get visited by the Travelers, to dispense sage advice.

Odo remains in the Great Link, allowing the Dominion to evolve into something more tolerant than what it is, though that takes a long time. In time, the Founders use their vast knowledge of genetics to do something good.

Bashir and Ezri ends quickly and painlessly. Not sure what happens with them... maybe Bashir becomes head of Starfleet Medical, though no one is quite sure what it is...

O'Brien stays on Earth. While my head canon is that Bashir was able to reduce the severity of the "prison" sentence, reducing the memories to a post tequila bender blur, the chief had suffered a lot of other stuff. He and Keiko moved to a small town where she operated an arboretum with Bajoran and Gamma Quadrant flora. No, nothing ever got away from her and infected Earth; Keiko is good at her job.

Quark hooked up with a bunch of disgruntled misogynist Ferengi capitalists who fled Ferenginar when it went Federation 2.0, and enjoyed years of wheeling and dealing with Brunt, Gaila, and others. Soon enough, Wuarks became a chain of holosuite parlors on multiple worlds. Being an expert in holograms, he also bought all the EMH Mark I's from the mining consortium, then sold them to wealthy hypochondriacs all over the Quadrant, and used the profits to buy his own moon.

Worf winds up as captain of the Enterprise E for a time, but also works alongside Chancellor Martok in reforming Klingon society. When Martok is killed by a Duras descendant, Worf avenges him and is promptly made Chancellor again. This time, there's no one to pass the mantle to, so Worf rules the Empire for many years.
