What could a future earth space ship look like.

I once cooked up a design for an Earth ship and it just so happens I still have it in my photobucket album. Here it is.

Nice. See there you go, it looks like a bullet and it has an appropriate design. It functions aren't to out of this world science fiction. I say that could very well work, its practical.

First: study was has already been planned.

The British Interplanetary Society proposed Project Daedalus back in the '70s:

It's not like Star Trek and sci-fi has been the only thing going for the past 40 years....

thank you for this, I hadn't had the time to do any real research.
But it said it was planned to be unmanned. Put the ships design is sound, it shows the basic functions. It not trying to look pretty or tough.

Now I am not talking about the shuttle. I could see that but as slightly modified cargo ship. I am talking about an actual star ship.
Do you think they will use any ships designs from star trek, Stargate, etc.

I think a future ship will be pencil-shaped or cylindrical. Keeping it long and thin is good because it will need to go through a lot of space while crashing into as few particles as possible. For this reason it will also have a thick and strong particle-shield up front, and since this shield will be heavy and expensive, it cant be to wide. This will also partly be because stuff that collides with the front-shield (the particles, dust, gas and so on) will deccelerate it.

A third reason for why the future space-ship will be cylindrical and long is that the living-space up front will want to distance itself from the engine, that will be hot and produce radioactivity, same with the powerplant. There wille be radio-blocking plating between this stuff and the rest, unless the fuel-tanks can block out most of it.

So Im pretty certain that a future ship will be shaped like a long cylinder. A elevator, a ladder, or both will go through it, and the floors will be arranged so that the floors faces the engine. This is also where the downpull will go during acceleration, so if we have gravity-plating by then we can shut it of during periods of acceleration and deceleration.

But it might also be that a future ship is donut-shaped and rotates around itself 2001 space-odyssey style. These kinds of ship will have a cylinder with food and water in the midle of the donut, and then the engine will be attached below it.

Yeah, i can see what you mean by the crew being away from the engine noise and radiation.
I would love to see a sketch of some sort if you have it.

I once cooked up a design for an Earth ship /.../
/.../ I say that could very well work, its practical.
Would require artificial gravity though (and that the Bussard ramjet principle could be made to work, if I understand the graphics correctly :) ).

The collectors are all along the outside of the craft and are raised off the hull on the side of the hull if you catch my drift. It's bullet shaped so as you can imagine the collectors go around the entire circle of the ship.

Yes, I can see that... kinda like holes in the hull leading into the reactor where the magic happens.

I have no problem whatsoever with that.

My problem is that the technology is still very much in the Fi part of Sci-Fi!

^ @Urge So the first idea is basically Babylon 5 with engines?
That would be a bretty BIG ship... how about just putting engines on the BT tower in London:

:p

*COUGH*

From the *godawful* BBC "comedy" (I use the term loosely) Hyperdrive if you don't remember it, but it was specifically designed to be like the BT tower in space. The writing was by and large crap, but the effects were pretty awesome.

Ahh the H.M.S. Dildonic. First of the Ribbed-for-her-pleasure class starships. Based on the old Soviet era Vostkok I believe.
