What Changes Would You Have For "The Return of the Archons"?

Yeah, on a philosophical level it's quintessential Trek. And it's also got effective, goofy fun too. :)
It's also the Prime Directive story, introducing an element to Trek lore that would provide rich story potential and provide fandom with one-fifth of all our arguments, by bulk, for decades to come.

Re: What Changes Would You Have For "The Return of the Archo

I just want them to add McCoy's phaser beam, when he, Kirk, and Spock are cornered, and defend themselves with their phasers. Except DeForest Kelley juts stands there holding his phaser up like it should be firing, but there's no beam!

...sadly, it looks like the shot *hasn't* been fixed, at least on the brief bit that's on the trailer.

Re: What Changes Would You Have For "The Return of the Archo

I always like how Kirk and crew dress in native-looking costumes to blend in with the natives in some episodes, thereby adhering to the Prime Directive and following the rules. But in episodes like "The Apple" and "Bread and Circuses" beam down IN UNIFORM with their alien weapons and equipment fully visible and near native cities and villages, exposing advanced extraterrestrial technology and knowledge to the more primitive natives and either never retrieving lost phasers and communicators or letting them use and inspect them!

It's fairly obvious. The conduct Kirk endorses in each individual Excursion is directly related to the amount of steam he needs to let out, either by arse-whupping or arse-boinking.

Undercover= I feel real serene today...

Out in the Open= Blood or Bitches, CHOOSE NOW!!

Re: What Changes Would You Have For "The Return of the Archo

Wow...I REALLY liked the Enterprise close up beauty shot after the opening titles...I almost thought they were going to do a zoom all the way down to the city on the planet! And no rays for the tubes. Nice.

Though for some reason, since Takei came out, hearing him raving about "the body" with that goofy grin on his face made me snicker like an 8th grader for a couple of minutes. :D

Re: What Changes Would You Have For "The Return of the Archo

You know, it occurs to me that they could have EASILY re-done the Landru computer from a boxy '60s-era perception of Enniac (or whatever) to something more visually interesting.

Kirk is such an ass for telling the guy who helped him "if I was you, I'd start looking for another job". What a dick! The guy's entire society is unraveling in front of him and Kirk rips on him for working in the "clergy" he just destroyed!

btw, this is one of my top Trek favs. This ep is classic Trek, a tight story and spooky build up. A classic ending, Kirk defeats the machine God/Commie or whatever. I await a dumb retcon connecting the Borg to Landru.

Yeah, on a philosophical level it's quintessential Trek. And it's also got effective, goofy fun too. :) I mean, really, Star Trek 101 about identity and culture, plus some really weird crap, and Kirk blows up a computer through use of reason - again. What's not to love?

It's all love, love of Landru. And another thing I love is it opens with one of Trek's best teasers... Sulu and soon-to-be-dead ensign running from the law-givers... great stuff. :bolian:

McNeil doesn't die! They get him back!

Re: What Changes Would You Have For "The Return of the Archo

DoH! You're right. I haven't seen this one in years... I wonder if it's on somewhere tonight? *hoping*

So true about Kirk.

I haven't seen much of the redone Trek, but I did catch the first few minutes last night. And, you're right...that extended shot (two shots, I think) of the Enterprise was really beautiful.

Re: What Changes Would You Have For "The Return of the Archo

They do love "showing off' the ship in closeups.

Re: What Changes Would You Have For "The Return of the Archo

One thing thats always bugged me about the episode was the shift from colonial to late 19th Century clothing. Why the change? Were Sulu and McNeil supposed to be dressed in anachronistic clothes (taken from the Archons records?) Did that give them away? Why didn't the Enterprise sensor readings provide them with more up to date clothes as it did the second landing party?

Re: What Changes Would You Have For "The Return of the Archo

^^^
Sulu and McNeil were scuttled by bad costuming? That's a great retcon! I think you're on to something.

Re: What Changes Would You Have For "The Return of the Archo

Not a retcon...it's in the script!

Re: What Changes Would You Have For "The Return of the Archo

It is not... what? I haven't seen it yet, it's on a 3am. Cut me some slack!

Re: What Changes Would You Have For "The Return of the Archo

I find it disturbing that all children (none were shown actually) in Landru's society are apparentlly conceived via rape during "The Red Hour".

Spock never explained the hooded guys' mechanical voices or the lack of a mechanism in those death tubes they carry.

There's no beam because the landing party didn't shoot in that direction. They were just taking up a defensive posture. When we see the POV in that direction, there are no unconscious bodies on the ground, just the zombified locals coming at them with sticks and rocks.

I liked the close-up shot of the Enterprise in the beginning, followed by the slow zoom on the planet showing the village from orbit.

THESE are the clothes they wear, not these!
