What brought you to TrekBBS?

I was vaguely aware of Web forums and was wondering if there were any Trek forums. I found some on the Yahoo search engine, most of which were pretty dead. I guessed the name TrekWeb and found that but never guessed TrekBBS, which I found a day or two later on Wikipedia. I clicked on the link, looked around, and joined.

... Tim Lynch's DS9 reviews on PsiPhi and Jim Wright's Voyager reviews, Andrew Tong's TNG website (then still on CalTech's system) and to threads at (the then-very much Black and Blue) TrekBBS.

I don't remember exactly, but I'd been reading Tim Lynch's reviews for years, and through them found Jammer's and Jim Wright' reviews. One of those sites led me to TBBS. At that time I had no idea what a BBS was, so I lurked for a while to get a handle on what was going on. I joined up in March 2000 when I saw a thread I had to reply to. The thread was about reviews. Sort of closed the circle, or something. :D
Wow, are you guys following me around? :wtf:

I credit Trek fandom with teaching me how to use the internet. I started out in the late 90s in an AOL chat room playing (and regularly winning ;))Star Trek Jeopardy with some sweet folks. Our group kinda fell apart however when the gentleman who organized and ran the game passed away. So, I started looking for other online fan stuff to do.

I had completely forgotten about Andrew Tong's site until you guys mentioned it - bookmarked that sucker quick! Fell in love with Tim Lynch's DS9 reviews and read them religiously through the end of the show. They made me hungry for other reviews, which led me to Jammer's Star Trek Hypertext & Jim Wright's Delta Blues. I don't think I've ever laughed so hard or long as I did over Jim's Voyager episode synopses! Anyway, I'm sure Jammer's site led me here, and the pending closure of Voyager's chapter finally compelled me to register and start posting. Coming up on seven years now - wow!

Star Trek: Enterprise.

The people at the startrek.com site were unbearable, largely. I had to look elsewhere. I found here.

Snap... and the situation hasn't changed much in 4-5 years. Sad to think the official endorsed site was open to that kind of abuse. Not good PR at all, let alone the damage it did to word of mouth about the show. Handling a well reasoned argument is fine and you can expect that here at TrekBBS, for the most part. But personal attacks because your taste differs are part of the course over at ST.com. The forums at the new film site seem to be moderated. So a lesson learned at some cost, I'd say.

I always looked for Star Trek starship pictures. So I was always downloading pictures and desktops from sites like "Star Trek In Sounds and Vision". Later I started to spot some 3D materials signed by reaaaally talented guys like a certain Dennis Bailey.
And then I started to look for sites with news of the upcoming movies. That's how I ended up on Trekweb. As someone mentioned earlier, it's a madhouse! I lurked a lot and there were some nice posters (I liked Jadzia Dax a lot), some were absolutely hilarious and some were total assholes. I'm not sure but someone once put a link to the TrekBBS to discuss designs of starships and one of the posters was Rick Sternbach. And I was like THE REAL Rick Sternbach???? And then I saw the Mike Okuda posted too and Mike Sussmann (who still lurks from times to times because I saw his user's name like two weeks ago). So I hung out most of the time and I saw that things were saner here rather than at Trekweb. Again I lurked a long time before I finally registered during ENT's final season. It was reaaaaally hot in the ENT forum. I remember Morpheus and Quills, especially their comments. ;)
Evil Robert replied to my very first post in Misc. and it felt as if I always belonged here.

I found out about the TrekBBS when the StarTrek.com chat rooms were going to be closed down because of some stupid legal nonsense and I thought I'd have a look.

Here I am and I've never looked back.

Jadzia Dax used to post here as well (if I ever had any question about Vulcans, I'd ask her). I haven't seen her post in a long, long time, though.

I joined to discuss Enterprise. I had first joined the Startrek.com messageboards, but those were always a mess. Someone at another board I posted at linked to TrekToday articles, so I followed them to this site.

I was bored at work and started googling.

You and me both. Although I was actually Yahooing.

Good to know I'm not the only one! If my boss ever found out how much time I wasted here I'd be in deep trouble.

Hey! It's not wasted! I learned how to put a coherent story together here. I learned what the most popular Ending Episode was. I learned BBS etiquette. These were all very valuable things.:guffaw:

In high school, my english class would always go to the computer lab to type up papers and whatnot, and I was online looking for information on the new Star Trek movie, Insurrection, and I stumbled upon the BBS then and never left.

Don't put everyone in that group. I was there when Enterprise was in it's run (First season and Second mostly) and I made some really good friends there. The spammers just ruined it, that's all. I mean if this site didn't have a warning system, I think it would be just like startrek.com.

I used to post at Farscapeworld... and someone there sent me a link to a particular forum here... and I was hooked right away. That guy has a lot to answer for...

Oh, this is terrible, I don't remember the full name, but it was Maquis... with some numbers behind it. Very funny guy, always cracking jokes... familiar?

I got here from a much smaller board that was dedicated to J/7 'shippers.

One day the founder of the board, a very nice British girl, told us to go "over to the big bad blue board" and vote in a poll that was taking place in the VOY forum, and so I came here, registered, voted in the poll, and I was gone. I forgot about Big Blue for a few months, and then one day I was curious to see if there were more polls and came back and never left.

On a side note, that small J/7 board was the place where I first met bod, who used to post here regularly, and also Orione, who posts here sporadically.

I just used to read TrekToday every day. When the Usenet group I used to be a very prominent member of died a death I had no-one to talk to about Star Trek so I moved here.

Now, ironically, I don't post nearly enough about Star Trek as I should.

I have been an avid reader of TrekToday for what feels like forever. Years ago i had an account on here but due to personal circumstances have had virtually no online presence for quite a few years.
After recently finding myself thrust back into the world of cyberspace, i quickly found myself on the startrek.com forums.
Now- At the risk of offending any startrek.com users who might be here and recognise me, since i still use it- That place is one of the most judgemental forums i have ever set my metaphorical foot on.
Sometimes i wonder if its moderated at all, because anything and everything seems to slip without much of a warning.
They spend so much time insulting one another because "my series is better than your series and you are stupid for liking it." Its almost laughable, and something i continually try to stay out of.
Sometimes the behaviour makes me wonder if they're star trek fans at all. Everything always becomes so personal, and everybody just lays into one another and its pretty brutal.
So.. I migrated here. I like it here, people have a nicer attitude, and seem to respect one anothers opinions if not always agree with them.
Still, for some reason i cant stay away from st.com. Its like a soap opera, a guilty pleasure you dont want to admit that you enjoy.
