What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

I have no controversial opinions about the JJ bridge. "It looks like an Apple store (and not in a good way)" is conventional wisdom.

It has no depth (physically or philosophically). It's the helm, the captain's chair, and a wall, blocking the commander from the command center. (?!?) The only thing that gives it shape are the bright lights pointed directly at the camera.

It's monotone. It looks like the playsets of earlier bridges that didn't look anything like what we saw in the show or the movies.

It feels like someone took a Star Wars fan and said "NO GREEBLIES!" and the SW fan figured if he just covered every inch with still meaningless detail but not greebly detail he could get away with it.

Maybe my Google powers are just weak, but I can't find a single drawing of that monstrosity. It's a bridge that's so bad that TREKIES won't draw it!

I kinda like the window.
Actually, our own @fireproof78 drew one here on TrekBBS: https://www.trekbbs.com/threads/kelvinverse-enterprise-bridge.307592/

I can understand not liking the monotone or the brightness.

It looked very brand-spanking-new to me, and I really like the clear standup stations.

And how does a bridge have philosophical depth?

At least the Kelvin Timeline Enterprise bridge HAS lights. ;)

There's definitely huge changes coming to how we define "TV". And people aren't going to return to cable. And they aren't going to simply acquiesce to the very thing that drove them away from cable in the first places: the excessive advertising ON TOP of paying a monthly sub. So a lot of streaming services are going to start to go under -- sooner than later. And Paramuon will be one of the first to go.

That's entirely possible, yeah. I've felt for a long time that this entire concept of a single-studio streamer made no sense, because audiences are not interested in only one "brand name" and no one studio really has enough of a back catalog to maintain a stable subscriber base month after month. Just like how back in the 90s, you didn't go to the Disney Video Store or the Paramount Video Store -- you went to Blockbuster or Family Video or whatever, and they would carry a wide variety of films across many different genres from many different studios.

However, I don't think the era of streaming Star Trek will end even if Paramount+ goes under. I think Paramount will just start producing Star Trek for distribution on Netflix or whatever streamer has survived.

I sometimes wonder if the entirety of Viacom is on it last days. They've made some really poor decisions over the past two decades. It wouldn't surprise me if someone :CoughAmazonCough: swoops in and cannabises the company, only taking the biggest IPs (Trek, M:I, TMNT, etc.) and leaving the rest for the vultures.

It's one thing to not follow U.S. politics closely, but to not recognize the name of the U.S. Vice President or to not have followed any news about the literal attempt to overthrow the U.S. government and install a dictatorship on 6 January 2021 is... a bit much.

Sorry, Sci. I couldn't tell you who the present VP is, or in fact any previous VPs... If that makes me somehow lesser in your eyes then I'm a little sad, but I just don't know.

So true, Blockbuster was almost Date night for the little woman and myself. At times picking out the movie was better entertainment than the movie.
Just this minute she's streaming in the kitchen and I'm here way on the other side of the house. At least we still fish together...lol

I don't think that's likely. Paramount Global (formerly called Viacom) controls too many other companies across the planet. They're having tough times but I don't get the impression they're in the kind of trouble that, say, Warner Bros. Discovery is in.

Sumner Redstone was a visionary when it came to entertainment. Many would disagree because they can't stand the guy...lol He had a sense of moving into the next big way of delivering entertainment while others were only thinking about it. I don't see that in Shari yet.
I stepped out of my Paramount holdings not because I worry about the corp. It's just a time to view from the sidelines. Buffett is dumping pocket change into this new "Broadcast system that claims a range of 300 miles and 10 times the channel band delivery. Today 30 miles borders on the limits of a single transmitter tower.
Will that put an end to internet streaming? Tune in next decade. Find out if Shari is still pushing the new rebrand to rebrand their old streaming service.

It doesn't make you lesser in my eyes, but this is an important thing you probably ought to know (especially since both Biden and Trump are so old). The current Vice President is Kamala Harris of California. Trump's Vice President was Mike Pence of Indiana. Harris is a former U.S. Senator and, before that, a former California Attorney General and San Francisco prosecutor who made her name with a "tough-on-crime" agenda. Pence is a former Indiana Governor and U.S. Representative and right-wing radio talk show host who made his name in the right-wing Evangelical Protestant movement and was particularly infamous for his anti-queer politics. On 6 January 2021, Trump tried to pressure Pence into violating his constitutional duty to ensure an accurate count of Electoral College votes while presiding over a joint session of Congress to count said votes; when Pence refused to violate his constitutional duties, Trump sicced the mob on the Capitol, and many in the crowd openly chanted of their desire to assassinate Pence.

I appreciate the time you took to type all that, Sci. I also appreciate the fact that you are a politically passionate person. I hope you can also appreciate that it’s just of no interest to me.

I really don’t mean to be rude when I say that. We all have our own passions and politics is just not one of mine.

Anyway, this place is neither the place nor time.
