What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

While it isn’t my favorite spinoff, Deep Space Nine seems like it is the only one that doesn’t come across as dated. Its storytelling seems as relevant now as when the show was in production.

Here's one:

DS9 has the least rewatch potential, it's too serialized and many episodes don't work on their own. If I want to watch a random Star Trek episode I usually pick TNG or Voyager.
Discovery is even more serialized but way shorter which means at least for now it's still rewatchable, especially because both seasons work as their own adventure unlike DS9 which has one big story arc.

For me that's why I love it, as you can start watching Emissary and before you know it you're three seasons in and watching characters grow and develop--which is really what I want seeing as how binging has now become common place. Of course there are some duds in there, but they're easily skipped (anything of importance will be included in recaps).

My controversial opinion: there are only three truly great Star Trek movies, and they are the Kelvin trilogy.

Recently rewatched TWOK and was surprised at just how overrated I found it.

^ but but.... wha...... what about "The Voyage Home"????????????????????????

2009 could have been okay, if they hadn't crammed in all 7, and promoted Kirk to Captain at the end. As a first meeting/Academy/First Adventure movie it was okay, but needed to end with Lt Kirk getting assigned to Farragut, while Spock stayed with Pike, and no Vulcan destruction. The second movie would have been okay, if not for the terrible "Khan" twist, and should have just stayed a rogue-SF officer storyline. The third movie is kinda okay.

It depends on what we mean by "great." I think of "greatness" in terms of gravitas and profundity, as with great literary and musical masterpieces. While it had it's shortcomings, TMP was the only Trek movie that really tried for anything like this.

That could have been done better. The rest was fine.

I agree on this point. Khan was not additive.

I think TWOK comes close in terms of interwoven themes and design.

They should make an Oscar-bait-wannabe World War III epic. A Star Trek movie like you've never seen before. Starring Tom Hanks and Danzel Washington. Just to get the full effect.

Complete with young Zephram Cochrane out in the trenches.

And since all of it was pre-FC, nothing would even LOOK like Star Trek, and there would be hardly any room to fit an easter egg. It wouldln't even have to have Star Trek in the title!

V is great. The Jack Marshall fanedit is one of my favorite Trek "episodes" ever. (Recut as a pilot length episode complete with commercial breaks and TOS sound FX, and most of the obnoxious parts removed). Amazing pacing.

I'll have to look this up.

I do think that not having Insurrection be a “men on a mission” behind enemy lines type Dominion War movie with the Enterprise was a missed opportunity.

Insurrection as it was is the only film in the entire franchise that I actively dislike.

That said, this fairly common sentiment that the film "should have been a Dominion War story" is basically the only thing I can think of that would have been worse than what we got.

That's apparently my controversial opinion! ;)
