Neelix and Kes were dull and very poorly thought out. It was better for all involved when Lien left the show.

Kes was a much better character once she broke up with Neelix, and episodes like Before and After and Warlord showcased that she had some serious acting chops that they had wasted in the first two seasons.
IMHO they should have had Kim die, as they originally had planned, considering he went on to do nothing for the next four seasons, and Garrett Wang's range was limited enough when they gave him chances to shine (like Nightingale) it was generally meh.
Dan Simmons in his "Hyperion" series has a character use the honorific "M" which works as you suggest. The only distinction was that androids were typically referred to with the honorific "A"
One would have to understand the M is an honorific and not first initial. It worked well in the novel(s) because the reader already knew the characters names and the individual was speaking to a group.
As a non-native speaker I get sometimes annoyed by neo-pronouns, because they're hella' confusing (plural singular? What?).

How does getting nearly assassinated make you a poor president? Theodore Roosevelt got shot and he's consistently ranked as one of the greatest US presidents.

We now have Anton Chekov in 2401 but hear only his voice as the Borg plot is unfolding and assimilating young cadets and officers. So that makes six Federation Presidents we know the names of.
Best Federation president is Nan Bacco, hands down. And no, she's not canon. 
And sticking with non-canon, the worst president was Min Zife. Would have been "Ishan Anjar", but he was technically only president pro tempore.

Yeah, seriously. We've only had 955 pages to build up to that. You've got to ease us into it more.
My wife thinks he best after Sisko. I am also a big Archer fan, too. He doesn't get enough love, really. (Nor does ENT, actually.)
If you're objectively looking at importance within the overall narrative of the entire franchise, Archer is a linchpin for the entire Trek universe.
- Pulls together all of the races who are the founders of the Federation, and implied to be an important figure in the Earth-Romulan War
- Responsible for reforming Vulcan society
- Saves Earth from the Xindi weapon
- Saves the Prime Timeline and ends the Temporal Cold War
But from season 3 on I thought Bakula and the writers found a groove where I bought Archer as someone who could be the captain of people out in deep space encountering weirdness, who understood the weight of it, but also as someone that aliens like Shran would honestly be like "hey, these humans aren't so bad" if you were dealing with him.
