That actually seems to be a pretty common opinion in my experience.

V has hands down the best Kirk/Spock/Bones stuff.

Say what you will about the rest of the flick but Shatner nailed that stuff.

Of course I was never interested in the Kirk/Spock/McCoy relationship, so that doesn't really save Star Trek V for me.

Though I guess that by itself is a controversial opinion.

I never liked nor was I interested in the whole Kirk/Spock/McCoy "dynamic"
And TOS would have probably be a better show if Janice Rand had been the "third main character" instead of McCoy.

Star Trek V is way better than it’s reputation unfairly paints it. It’s definitely impacted by the writers strike, studio refusing to move the release date etc etc but it’s really rather fantastic in its character focus and it’s more subtler moments are among the movie era’s best.

I always say there’s a good movie in there trying to get out. I think with a couple of tweaks (no reason at all for Sybok to be Spock’s brother, fix some of the Klingon stuff) and a solid f/x budget (Kirk falling off El Capitan looks downright amateurish) it would probably be my favorite ST film.

As it stands, it has a special place in my heart, despite its flaws.

Whatever one thinks of the rest of the movie this belongs in the pantheon of all-time greatest Trek film moments.

If instead of yet another god alien nonsense (how many of them had Star Trek had by that point 5? 6?) they had focused the story, somehow, on that Planet of Intergalactic Peace and Paradise City, with maybe the antagonist just being a cult leader trying to take over the place and exploiting the people there, then I think it could have been a good Star Trek movie.
(though, and I know people will disagree with me here, that horrible campfire singing scene needs to be cut as well *shudder*)

And that with the god alien maybe leads to another controversial opinion.
If a Trek episode, or movie, has the plot "they meet god but it's really an alienz" then I skip it, because I'm sick of how often the franchise re-tread that plotline.

I think it got all the Kirk-Spock-Bones beats down very well. I think the rest of the cast were very poorly handled.

When V is on top of it's game, it did well. When it tried to do comedy or any interactions outside of the big 3 it languished more and more.

The Kirk-Spock-McCoy scenes were almost entirely gold. The Scotty-Uhura stuff started out fine but the relationship that came out of nowhere and was never mentioned again and how little Sulu and Chekov got to do did not help the movie.

I'm surprised that this is the first you hear of it, I'm very vocal about my pure revulsion regarding that scene. Just like with my dislike of Edith the Keeler Elf and City on the Edge of Forever in general.

They need to do Rocky vs. Drago style recuts of both TFF and NEM.

No doubt, cannot be stressed enough, the character beats are Top Shelf.

But another excellent feature is the pacing. Be sure to go to the restroom before you start because the beginning slow roll just keeps gaining momentum to the point there is never a good place to take a break. Even the places where not much is physically going on are filled with attention holding tension. Fans will get it.

And, as many flaws as the movie has and as low as it ranks on most fans' lists, TFF gave us Sybok, a character even the critics generally gave points because of Laurence Luckinbill's outstanding performance and a character that's coming back in SNW where we learn more of his backstory.

As for Star Trek V, am I the only person who really likes the whole "row, row, row your boat" thing?

OK, y'all have made me want to rewatch STV. I probably haven't seen it since it came out!
