What are you watching???

"The Hive," Stargate Atlantis Season Two

"The clowns? Oh, yeah, the clowns. We fight them too; entire armies, spilling out of Volkswagens. We do our best to fight them off, but they keep sending `em in."

Has anyone been watching CNN's The Seventies? If so, did you also find it cheesy how they snuck in that rushed montage of all the artists they didn't find time to cover at the end while they were still talking specifically about New Wave?

Yeah, they glossed over a TON of big names throughout the episode. Led Zepplin only got a brief piece about their personal jet.

It's always funny how -- on this series, the previous series the Sixties, and undoubtably with the series next summer (the Eighties) -- they dig up "historical experts" on that particular era that zealously declare the featured decade to be the absolute best in television, music, film, etc.

Chris Connelly stated that it would be "hard to argue" that the best stuff from any genre of music came out in the 70s. :wtf: I think someone used the words "golden age" during the TV segment.

These docuseries are really well produced but I wish they'd lay off the hyperbole.

Yeah...70s music in general has a lot to offer and shouldn't be underestimated...but that comment about it having the best of any genre got a :wtf: from me as well.

I was surprised that they spent so much of the episode in the pre-disco era, but at the same time, they barely scratched the surface of what was going on in early-to-mid-70s music. The coverage of late 70s music just seemed rushed.

I also thought it odd how they snuck in that very brief "history of Motown" segment early in the episode. I don't remember, did they manage to not cover Motown in either of the music-centric episodes of The Sixties last year...?

I also found it a questionable choice to save the music episode for last...seems like it would have fit better somewhere in the middle. "The State of the Union Is Not Good" would have been a fitting end to the series, since it took its topic all the way into early '81 (Reagan assuming office / release of the hostages).

Right now I'm digitizing Daffy Duck Cartoons from DVD to a thumbdrive, so I can watch them anywhere and any time. :)

Time Warner does not want you to do that. Legally you do not own those cartoons, you have only leased the right to view them on the medium (that dvd) which you have actually purchased to own.

Funny, huh?

Yeah, I think they covered Motown last year. I know for certain they talked about the Beatles last year but that didn't stop them from discussing, at length, their break-up and solo work. Huge events in the music biz at that time, without question, but it took time away from other artists and subjects.

Completely agree on the shuffling of episodes. The Carter episode would've been a much more appropriate finale, since, as you said, it ends with the perfect transition into the Reagan era of the 80s.

Yeah, even as a huge Beatles fan, I thought they spent an awkward amount of time covering them early in the episode.

Then there was the whole "next Beatles" effect throughout the rest of the episode. Back when we had VH1 and they were doing all those "Behind the Music" documentaries ca. 2000, the ex and I would laugh about how every single documentary had a point where the artist being covered was compared to the Beatles in some manner. There were so many Beatles comparisons in this episode that if you were playing a drinking game, you'd be unconscious halfway through.

Regarding Motown...I specifically remember them featuring R&B artists in the "British Invasion" episode, but I'm not sure if they ever got into the Motown scene as a specific phenomenon.

ETA: On the 1968 episode of Mod Squad that DECADES is currently showing, the bad guys are using a van that bears an uncanny resemblance to the Mystery Machine...!
