What are you reading?

I am , much to the amusement of my son, listening to a Mr Men audiobook read by Jim Dale. The audiobook has the following stories -

  • Mr. Happy
  • Mr. Messy
  • Mr. Funny
  • Mr. Noisy
  • Mr. Bump
  • Mr. Grumpy
  • Mr. Brave
  • Mr. Mischief
  • Mr. Birthday
  • Mr. Small
I think I could listen to Jim Dale reading a phone book and enjoy it. I loved him as the narrator of the TV series, Pushing Daisies.

Yes, he was in some of the Carry On movies.

I want to listen to the Harry Potter books and have to make a difficult choice between the Jim Dale or Stephen Fry versions. I will probably end up going with Jim Dale.

The Burning Wire by Jeffrey Deaver...it's a murder mystery using electricity as the weapon. very good.

I'm atm reading "the Giraffe, the Pelly and me" by Roald Dahl.
While I like Dahl's eccentic characters a lot, the illustrations of his books are usually almost better than the text. His Lordship staring at the Giraffe as she uses her telescopic neck is absolutely priceless! :D

I've listened to the Jim Dale version -- it's fabulous! Thanks for posting his interview. Now I'd like to get my hands on the Fry version. Easier said than done in the US. :(

I'm halfway through The Lives of a Cell, which so far has said very little about cells. I think I'll follow this with some actual science, like 10% Human or Unnatural Selection.

ALL DAY I've been looking, ALL DAY!

Well, admittedly intermittently, but since I had my first glance at my news-feeds sometimes during 'breakfast' (= coffee) earlier today, I've been searching high and low for my copy of Focault's Pendulum... I was even tempted to just buy a new (but digital) copy at some point.

RIP Umberto Eco.

One place to look remains, and if it's not there I might have to start calling people who might have borrowed it...

I've started a book called Starfish by Peter Watts. A bunch of crazy people are genetically modified to be able to live deep underwater at power plants near the bottom of the ocean. I'm only a short way into it, but its interesting so far.

Enki Bilals The Carnival of Immortals. (And I'll probably read the rest of the trilogy later tonight.)

Started last night when I watched his film, Immortel (ad vitam)... As beautiful as it is, it's just nothing like the real thing.

Book, copyright 2014. Enchanted Objects Design, Human Desire, And The Internet of Things by David Rose.

The author discusses different concepts for interfaces between humans and machines:

1. The present is a "terminal world" of "glass slabs".

2. Heads up displays, and Augmented Reality.

3. An "animism" of "social robots".

4. "Enchanting Everyday Objects"
