What are you reading?

That's too bad. The first one was pretty good. What didn't you like about it?

Lots of potential that I don't think it lived up to.

One of the little things that really annoyed me: The bits of Russian and Yiddish/Hebrew dialog were transliterated into the Latin alphabet, so there was no way to look them up in a dictionary or use an online translator. The Russian wasn't a problem for me, because I know the language (not well, but enough for this), but most of the Yiddish and Hebrew was a mystery.

Plus, by now, I'm really tired of how much violence there is in most of his (Jonathan's) books. Torture, in this one.

You liked the first book more than I did, so you'll probably like this one.

Reading Jerome K. Jeromes Three Men in a Boat.

I knew it was going to be a funny read, but didn't expect it to be hilarious!

(It was published before I was born.)

I'll shoot for Rendezvous with Rama, The Time Machine, Foundation, Starship Troopers and Neuromancer. Don't know if I'll fit a sixth book in but I'll try.
I haven't read Starship Troopers yet, but I loved all the rest of those.

Lots of potential that I don't think it lived up to.

Have you tried the iPhone translator app that reads stuff right off the page?

Violence and torture don't sound appealing. I did enjoy the first one, but I don't feel motivated to read a sequel since you disliked it so much. Maybe I'll look for a different Golem novel. There seem to be more of them than I thought.

I've been reading:

Star Wars: The Force Awakens Visual Dictionary (hella awesome!)
Supergirl: The New 52, Vols. 4-6
Supergirl: Beyond Good and Evil (meh)
Power Girl: Bomb Squad (PG is awesome as always)
Batwoman: The New 52
, Vols. 2&3 (I like the character)

I read Dream Doll about Ruth Handler and Mattel the past couple of days. I really need to finish Star Trek Voyager: Atonement so I can read A Pocket Full of Lies.

Finished reading Batwoman, The New 52 series....Vols. 4 - 6. An awesome and sexy character, I think.

I also read The Godfather movie script.

Just finished the lost book of enki and the epic of gilgamesh- direct translation, which wasn't as epic as I expected. Am now working through some of the Apocrypha and Psuedopigrapha.
I'm not religious bit I do like stories and reflecting on the effect these stories and all their incarnations have had on our various cultures.
Besides, aliens! Ancient nuke weilding aliens! Can't resist.

I've read the Star Wars 7 novelisation recently. If you're interested, I'd say don't bother. It's simply an earlier draft of the script in prose form featuring a lot of head-hopping and exposition-spouting by characters who wouldn't act like that. It's not terrible, but it's not any good, either.

I've been re-reading a monograph, The Lavender Scare, for a lesson I'll teach for one my classes. It's a interesting examination of the fear and paranoia of a supposed homosexual threat to national security that coincided with McCarthyism of 1950s America.

Still working my way through Gaiman (v good) but also just finished Midnight in the Garden Centre of Good and Evil which was a highly enjoyable read. I may be accused of bias because the author was one of three (me included) who were chosen via Abaddon books open submission call but frankly that just encouraged me to buy the book, I would be honest if I hadn't liked it! Anyway its a slacker comedy meets a 1950s' style alien invasion.

I'll be interested in hearing your impressions. I haven't read it yet, but I've heard that it's more interesting than the movie, if no more plausible. There's also a sequel.

RJDiogenes, my book includes the sequel. I didn't know it did until this morning. So far, I'm enjoying the book. It is dated but still a very good read!

Oh, sweet. I just found a Bison edition on Amazon with both books in it. Is that the one you have?

I'm going to do this 2016 reading challenge that a friend posted on Facebook (not sure where it comes from):

a book published this year
a book you can finish in a day
a book you've been meaning to read
a book recommended by your local librarian or bookseller
a book you should have read in school
a book chosen for you by your spouse, partner, sibling, child, or BFF
a book published before you were born
a book that was banned at some point
a book you previously abandoned
a book you own but have never read
a book that intimidates you
a book you've already read at least once

A book you've already read at least once: I was feeling kind of run down, mentally and physically, for a couple weeks, so I reread some Harry Potter. Comfort reading has fewer carbs than comfort food. ;)
