What are you reading?

In Feb. I read:
Starship Troopers - 3+ Parts of it were good, but I can see why people complain about outdated philosophizing.
Rendezvous With Rama - 4+ Quite enjoyed this one. Definitely my favorite of the classics I read
Foundation - 3.5+ liked each vignette individually, but it loses a bit of steam with each jump as far as the overall narrative goes
Neuromancer - 3 It took forever to understand what was going on. It would probably benefit from a reread
The Time Machine - 3 Interesting, but short
Morning Star - 4.5+ I loved the whole Red Rising series. If you're looking for an action packed ride, look no farther
Leviathan Wakes - 4 I didn't absolutely love it, but I'm interested to see where the series goes
The Island Of Dr. Moreau - 2+ Didn't really care for it.
The Short Drop - 4 I figured out everything well in advance (I think around 72%?) but felt smart for doing so. Also not a scifi book.

March I plan to read books dealing with mental illness. So, The Bell Jar, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Girl, Interrupted, All the Bright Places, and Room.

I'm happy to hear that. As I mentioned, it's my favorite novel. I still have the two issues of Galaxy magazine where it first appeared that I bought off the newsstand.

Did you just read Foundation or the trilogy? Overall, if you include the sequels and prequels, it's really an amazing story. You might also want to include the Robot Novels, too-- Robots And Empire at the very least.

Yesterday I finished "The Year of the Quiet Sun" by Wilson Tucker, about a top-secret time-travel project controlled by 'The White House' (it's partly a political and social Sci-Fi), where three people (an army-guy, a navy-guy and a civillian) are put forward in time (one at a time) in order to gather intelligence on the future and bring it back.

Not surprisingly, the political interference in such a dangerous undertaking, spels out disaster. The time-travel parts of the novel are somewhat unique, at least when it comes to the technical side of things, the drama is quite cute on the personal level and, of course, a horrible end of civilization as we know it is spelled out in colourful detail.
I really liked it and read it almost in one sitting.

I then began reading Philip K. Dick's "Time Out of Joint", In which a man discovers that the 1950's small-town world he is living in, is a scam, and that it really is the 1990's outside the small-town-world that is carefully maintained around him. Loved it.

Within the hour I plan to begin John Brunner's "Stand on Zanzibar" - I just read the foreword by Bruce Sterling, and got hooked on the story.

Reading Susanna Clarke's "The Ladies of Grace Adieu." I loved "Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell" so much, I had to find something else like it. Has anyone read Crowley's "Little Big?" I hear that's good, too and I'm looking for more fantasy/Gaiman-like books to read.

Just finished Who Do You Love?, by Jennifer Weiner. Meh.

Working on United, by Senator Cory Booker. Very interesting.

"The Rivers of London" by Ben Aaronovich. (Imagine Harry Potter as a copper.) Nice writing with a dry humour that reminds me a bit of Terry Pratchett. And London being my favourite city it's so much fun to read about all the places I know, love and miss :)

I just read Foundation, but I do plan to go back and read the rest of the trilogy.

^^ Cool. Hopefully you'll like it enough to read all the sequels and prequels. A lot of interesting stuff happens.

Finished John Brunner's Stand on Zanzibar last night... WOW, what a thrill-ride!

Wikipedia said:
Stand on Zanzibar was innovative within the science fiction genre for mixing narrative with entire chapters dedicated to providing background information and worldbuilding, to create a sprawling narrative that presents a complex and multi-faceted view of the story's future world. Such information-rich chapters were often constructed from many short paragraphs, sentences, or fragments thereof — pulled from sources such as slogans, snatches of conversation, advertising text, songs, extracts from newspapers and books, and other cultural detritus.
There's a party, in the book, during which the reader is taken on a tour of glimpses of conversations; a joke, for instance, is doing the rounds, and we hear it in four installments.

If I were ever asked to recommend a Sci-Fi-novel to an outsider, this would be it.
(And I feel a bit let down that noone has recommended it to me -ever.)

Just finished A Confederation of Valor by Tonya Huff, which is the first two books of her Valor series in one book. It was an entertaining military Sci Fi book, and I intend to read the rest of the series. Next, though, I'll be starting a military sci fi book from another author, On Basilisk Station by David Weber.

On Basilisk Station is really tough to get through. I generally like Military Sci Fi, but the universe isn't really clicking for me. Its still pretty early going though, and I definitely want to give such a big series a fair shot.

I've just finished Dwarves In Space V and I've started reading the screenplay for Wolf Man vs. Dractula, an unproduced Universal screenplay from the 1940s.
