What Are You Eating/Drinking (Any Time)?

Re: What Are You Eating/Drinking Right Now?

Ah! -I just thought that it was called 'ground pepper' -and the thing that grinds it called a 'pepper mill' -so my confusion stems from my bad English.

Freshly ground pepper is one of my favourite spices!

Here's my pepper mill (or is it a grinder? (now see what you did there!)):

The mechanism is French but the housing and design is Danish. (And if I'd had a better camera you could see the wooden texture)

ETA;

Oh, And when I need lots of pepper I use this little handy contraption to help me grind it:

^ I see you really loves you some pepper! :D Power tools(!) for when a little twist just isn't enough!

Might have some ginger tea in a moment...

Southern Comfort and Green Berry Rush Hawaiian Punch.

Re: What Are You Eating/Drinking Right Now?

You use a DRILL PHASER to grind your pepper?! That is awesome.

In Aus ground pepper means it is finer and more powdery. I don't have a pepper mill because every one I've bought hasn't worked properly for some reason, so I just buy the plastic disposable ones with pepper in them in the supermarket. I got given a mill recently that works well but the grind is too fine for me.

I use a LOT of cracked pepper.

Here is a great sandwich recipe highlighting the fabness of cracked pepper:

Two pieces white bread toasted, set aside to cool a bit.

Thinly slice a tomato. Spread US/Ca mayonnaise thinly on first slice of toast, layer with tomatoes slices. Spread mayonnaise THICKLY, like you can't go too thick, on second piece of toast. Grind cracked pepper all over tomatoes until they are thickly covered with pepper and place second mayo covered toast on top. The contrast of the fresh tomato, mayo and pepper is fabulous.

What kind of beer is that behind the phaser drill? :D

Re: What Are You Eating/Drinking Right Now?

^ Bought this Ikea spice mill recently, as it has a switch that allows you to choose how chunky or fine you want the grinding... plus if you buy spice jars from the same line, the grinder is detachable so you can attach it to the other jars without having to fiddle about all day. Has saved me no end of trouble already. :D

Re: What Are You Eating/Drinking Right Now?

When I turned thirty but noone gave me a pepper-mill  (might be a local Danish thing though: people that turn thirty but are not married are called pepper-something-or-other and their friends usually place an oversize (oil-drum and upwards!) pepper-mill outside the house they live in and/or give pepper-mills as gifts.) I just had to go out and buy myself the best I could find (both in relation to the mechanism (Peugeot) and the 'feel' of the thing (Design by R. Nissen of Bodum).

We also have a word for that powder-stuff (that I'm not in the mood to figure out how to translate right now) but I don't use that as I find it rather tasteless (lit.) albeit sometimes with a 'hot' edge.

Pepper MUST be fresh ground(/cracked)! I can get by for months without any spices or herbs -if I just have plenty of black pepper I can grind.

I don't think I actually used that power-grinder of mine :rommie: more than maybe twice -I did a roast once and IIRC I used it once while BBQing...

Pepper and tomato is a classic -I don't need the mayo for that, but perhaps a pinch of (good) salt.

The Beer is a "Giraf Gold" from the local brewery. It's a decent enough beverage, but by far not as good as the "Giraf", which probably is why it's locally referred to as "Woman's Giraf" :p

Wow that's an incredibly amusing little tradition!!!!

My dad has sent me about 10 pepper mills over the years. From garage sales. None have worked very well.

Re: What Are You Eating/Drinking Right Now?

Actually, It was my dad's dad that taught me that the Peugeot-mechanism is the only one that actually works. :rommie:

A woman becomes a "pepper-maid" at thirty if not married a guy would be a 'peber-svend' -I just don't know any English word that could be used for 'svend' but google translate suggest 'journeyman'.

Looked it up on (Danish) Wikipedia: the term came into use around 1530 to describe the travelling salesmen in pepper and other costly spices -they were, apparently, not allowed to 'fraternise' or marry. During the 1500's the term became synonymous with 'unmarried man'.

The 'pepper-maid'-term did however not come into use until during the 1700's.

I had some mashed potatoes, and am finishing off a glass of water. Earlier I had a Diet Pepsi.

Water... it's morning... well, it's actually afternoon as it was morning when I went to bed...

Re: What Are You Eating/Drinking Right Now?

Hot water with freshly sliced ginger and lemon - a little under the weather. It may or may not have been brought on by boxing on the Wii with my brother for several hours straight, then riding my bike in the rain directly afterwards. I feel like someone kicked the shit out of me, it hurts do the simplest of movements. I probably had something coming on anyway, engaging in too much activity precisely then probably didn't help the process.
