What are some of your guilty pleasure movies?

I always wondered if 'sinanju' was real... :vulcan:
An invention of the author of the book series. However, when reading some of those old pot boilers, it seemed to me that Sinanju was was supposed to be Hapkido. Though I could have been inferring a lot.
Cool, it says that Hapkidot evolved from a jujutsu tradition not to different from the one I've been practicing for years. I guess I can now sign my post as Iguana, Unworthy Pale Piece of Pig's Ear.

I have no problems in coming out and saying that I own and get a genuine kick from movies like Commando, The Rock, Judge Dredd, The Black Hole, Final Destinations 1-3, Event Horizon and Wild Things.

On the other hand, I'm generally rather less quick to admit that Stealth (one of the most stupid and worthless movies - no, things - in human history), Razor Blade Smile (low-budget lesbian vampires in latex!), Down With Love (possibly the most camp film ever made), Speed 2 (nuff said) and both xXx movies (dumb and way, way, way dumber) are in my DVD collection, and have all been watched more than once. Maybe I should hide them behind my Godfather boxset or something.

If we're going beyond Sci Fi/Fantasy, I have two others:

Overboard: This movie is hilarious. Anytime I run across it on TV I stop and watch a while.

Miss Congeniality: Same here. Gracie Lou Freebush is my hero.

:techman:

^ There was actually more to Stealth than I thought there would be. Decent flick, IMO. Not great, but decent.

I'd also like to add Enemy Mine and The Deadly Mantis to my list.

Romy and Michele's High School Reunion" is seriously one of my favourite movies of all-time. I guess if you're a guy (as I am), it could be considered a 'guilty pleasure' because it's kind of a 'girly' movie, but not because of poor quality. It's hilarious, clever, sweet, and full of wonderful performances, characters, and dialog. And "Not Another Teen Movie" is a masterpiece compared to most of the parody movies out there. I think it and the first "Scary Movie" are the only ones with even the tiniest bit of wit and cleverness to have come out in recent years.

Death To Smoochy
Fantastic Four 1&2
Go
9 to 5
ID4
Daredevil
The Transporter
Final Fantasy: Spirits Within
What's Up Doc?

David Lynch's Dune.

You either love Independence Day or you're with the terrorists!:p

Super Mario Bros. I honestly can't defend this movie but I really do enjoy it. They took a concept impossible to adapt into live action and just warped & twisted it until it fit. Dennis Hopper is particularly good as King Koopa. Bob Hoskins is always fun. And John Leguizamo has nothing to apologize for.

Underworld Trilogy
I can definitely see why these movies are not liked by critics. I can't help but like them though. I think they have a pretty cool and well thought out mythology, and I like the atmosphere of the movies and the visuals. It is mainly just the first one I like, but the other two are okay also.

The original Underworld is the only one that is really any good. But I still own all 3 and I have a great affinity for the franchise. There are now rumors of a potential Underworld IV. http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/film/4248/headlines

Highlander II - Awful sequel, OK sci-fi movie in it's own right

Sorta. Even separated from the rest of the Highlander franchise, the plot is still awful. However, the movie has tons of great action scenes & production design. Plus, some excellent campy performances from Christopher Lambert, Michael Ironside, Sean Connery, & John C. McGinley.

Moon 44 - Very early Roland Emmerich film. Does not blow up the Whitehouse, yet still manages to be awesome.

He doesn't blow up the White House, huh? What about the Pyramids? Is there anything about the Pyramids in there? That's the requirement for every Roland Emmerich movie. He either has to destroy national landmarks (2012, The Day After Tomorrow, Godzilla, Independence Day) or postulate a new theory about who built the Pyramids (10,000 B.C.; Stargate).

I have no problems in coming out and saying that I own and get a genuine kick from movies like Commando, The Rock, Judge Dredd, The Black Hole, Final Destinations 1-3, Event Horizon and Wild Things.

I'll 2nd Wild Things, although I classify that on a completely different guilty pleasure list alongside Bound, Cruel Intentions, Embrace of the Vampire, Femme Fatale, & Wild Side.

Again, I'm sorry if I'm sounding like a broken record, but that is so not a guilty pleasure movie. If anything, I'd call it an underrated gem, and arguably the best movie the Wachowski brothers have made so far. Understandably, many probably like "The Matrix" more, but I doubt most people would call the sequels better than this movie. Just 'cause it has two hot babes getting intimate doesn't make it a trashy skin flick. It actually has a brilliantly suspenseful plot and stellar performances from all involved.

I don't really feel guilty about liking any of the films that I do. But there are some that I recognize aren't very good, yet still enjoy them.

The first is "Fiend Without a Face", a scifi/horror hybrid from 1958. I love classic monster films, and hold most of them in very high regard. This one is fun, but mind bogglingly stupid. The ultimate insult to the viewer's intelligence comes in the climax, when the protagonist decides to shut down a nuclear reactor (which the titular "fiends" have been feeding off of and killing people) by using dynamite to BLOW UP THE CONTROL ROOM.

Why he couldn't just, I don't know, use the control room for its intended purpose and shut the reactor down normally. I'm guessing that was just not exciting enough for the producers. Still, did audiences in the 50s really believe that the best way to turn something off was to destroy its "on" switch?

The other movie on my list is "Day After Tomorrow", and out of all the movies I like (for whatever reason), it's the one I come closest to feeling guilty over. Mostly because I really dislike Roland Emmerich's filmography as a whole, and his whole "blow the shit out of everything" formula. He's like Michael Bay, except he knows how to hold the camera still. Which I suppose is an achievement of sorts.

But while there are better alien invasion movies (than Independence Day) and better giant monster movies (than the US godzilla), when it comes to having the weather destroy the planet, there aren't a whole lot of movies out there. And moronic pseudo-science aside, I think it's a neat idea. So much so that I can forgive the truly painful screenwriting, frequent lapses in the most basic of logic, and the atrociously bad cgi wolves. At least, for a little while. But it's not like this is a film I watch very often.

It also helps that I have something of a nostalgic connection to the film. *shrugs*

On an entirely on topical note, I've spent the last month or so slowly collecting and marathoning Arnold Schwarzenegger films. Last night I watched Stay Hungry for the first time in like twenty years and Pumping Iron the night before. (Many of his titles are available on DVD through various outlets for $5-7.)

The Howling - Not that guilty actually, an fun, imaginative if cheap werewolf movie.

Howling 2, now there's a guilty one. It's sooo bad that it's awesome. Christopher Lee, Reb Brown and Sybil Danning! 80's s&m crap, creepy castle, cheesy new wave rock...

"By the pale, pale light, pale, pale light of the moon glow!"

Mysterious Island, the 50's one. That's a classic. (I tried watching the Hallmark miniseries....barf!)

Men of War, Dolph Lundgren's best movie...yes, better than Rocky IV.

I have to go with Hudson Hawk too. I loved the ridiculous idea that you could time a crime by singing as you go. Bruce Willis & Danny Aiello can carrying a tune well enoug though.
Flash Gordon, purely for Brian Blessed. If you ever get the chance to watch the extended episode of the British panel show, Have I Got News For You?, that he hosted take it. He's insane in a lovable way.

exodus, no need to feel guilty about Daredevil. It's one of the best, darkest, most atmospheric comic book movies ever made.

I refuse to feel guilty about the 1st & 4th Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies. However, the 2nd film is pretty cheesy and the 3rd film is excruciatingly bad. Yet I can't help but love them because they're Turtles films.

If you turn off almost all your brain, Wild Wild West is pretty fun.

The Avengers and Batman & Robin purely for Uma Thurman's wardrobe.

You're right. The plot is good. But I'll still classify it as a guilty pleasure because I've watched it all the way through only once whereas I've watched *certain* scenes dozens of times on a continuous loop.

The Avengers was the first movie that I thought of when it comes to guilty pleasures. It makes no sense overall but I love its cheesiness. I saw it in theaters and rented it several times and it was one of the first DVDs that I owned.

Also, I can watch Wild Wild West and Batman & Robin and enjoy them for the bad movies that they are.

I can also put on the list:
Alien Resurrection
Elektra
both Fantastic Four movies
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life

Since I seem to rewatch at least part of it everytime I go past it while channel surfing, Resident Evil Extinction. The other two films, not really.

Yeah, same here, and they do show it a lot it seems.

I've seen this a few times as well.

Speaking of video game movies, I guess I'd add Street Fighter, Double Dragon, Mortal Kombat and Wing Commander to that list as well. Hell, I didn't even mind that Chun Li movie though it didn't deeply embrace the source material like the others. Even House of the Dead had Erica Durance topless and that Asian chick in the Old Glory bodysuit so it wasn't a complete loss.

I only saw it once so maybe I was in a generous mood but I enjoyed Death Race for the silly movie it was.

Can't think of anything else at the moment but I watch a lot of crap so I know there's more it's just not coming to me.:)

"Mortal Kombat" is okay. At least it has a simple story that makes sense and fun production design/costumes that are true to the source material (unlike "Super Mario Bros."). The second time I saw it (first time as an adult), I thought it seemed more like a typical kung fu movie (although I haven't seen many of those) that just happened to have characters and costumes from a video game.

A friend of mine was recently pointing out to me how one of the reasons it works better than other video game/comic book movies is that they didn't go to the trouble of trying to explain the origins of characters like Sub Zero and Scorpion. They just show up with their special abilities and we don't know how they got that way. And I don't want to know, because any explanation would be ridiculous, so I think my friend made a good point.
