Weyoun: where does his name come from?

Aquehonga

Fleet Captain
Was Weyoun somehow derived from Weyland-Yutani by DS9's writers?

Is Weyoun derived from Waylon, as in Smithers?

How did they come up with that catchy, memorable moniker?

I always wondered if it was intended to resemble any Arabic words? Does anyone who speaks that language know the answer to that?

Picture Vick Fontaine singing:

"W is for the many ways you care

E is for the eye that can't see what's there

Y is for you, you faithful friendly friend

O is for outrageous and ostensible, but not quite so original

U is because you think you're so unworthy

and N, is because there's no one just like you (because the cloning labs all blowed up)

Put them all together and they spell Weyoun..."

I think weyoun is supposed to have the characteristics of a french courtier in the 18th century, a Japanese functionary and an American business manger.
The name is simply made up on the spot IMO.

Actually, the word is Celtic and not very well known. There are several versions of the word that vary in spelling yet all essentially mean 'fair'. There is also an Asian spelling of the name as 'Wayoon'.

I stand corrected! Thanks for the info Odo's_Bucket, and it seems that someone on the DS9 writing staff had a sense of irony:lol:

But I find Weyoun VERY fair in the old-fashioned sense of the word. For he has a fair complexion, and is fair of face.

^ but that's the point....we're Trekkies, and we have brains to think about this stuff. ;) :P

"weyoun" is a Gaelic word? really?!

:grabs Gaelic dictionary:

weird, it says there's technically no W in Gaelic. hmm.

Well, that shoots down my theory that he was named for famous American cowboy actor John "Duke" Weyoun.
