Wesley and the First Duty

Jetboogieman

Commander
Red Shirt
This one always bothered me because without knowing the intricacies of Federation Law and even those of Starfleet Academy...

It seems to me that Wesley got off way too lightly and that the excuse of "Oh well Lacarno took the fall so it's all good you'll just have to repeat a year" seemed a little convenient as far as the writing went.

Wesley lied before an official inquiry by Starfleet into a fatality that they were clearly all complicit in and attempted to cover up...

It also bothers me because it was quit the missed opportunity to move Wesley in a different direction, maybe they should have expelled him and he could have continued to function in some other capacity in the show and I think that would have made his actions in "The Journey" make more sense.

I dunno, just nerd thinking out loud

Wesley's slate being obviously not so clean would be one thing, expelling him another. Beverly and Picard would be disappointed. At least at first. Being expelled, he would have to earn back their trust and respect. It would have been interesting to see that.

What I don't like is the whole Traveller business.

They were trying to teach him a lesson. He might learn the lesson the hard way if they expelled him, but they wouldn't get the better officer in return.
