Were Riker and Troi having casual sex during the series?

For sure they did. In the future with no STDs and monthly birth control injections. Why not.
A more free-spirited and libertine approach to this would seem to be more in line with Roddenberry's views on things. It's surprising that humans in Trek have tended to be rather conservative in this regard.

There is no indication that they ever had any casual encounters. Quite the opposite, both talked early in the show's run about how emotionally difficult it was seeing each other again. Though libertine attitudes towards sex was common in Trek, they never said it had no emotional impact.

I wouldn't think it frequent enough to describe it as casual, because even in that stuff from Menage a Troi, I seem to recall her mom dogging her about letting Riker slip away, but did it happen a time or two? I imagine so. Even if only inadvertantly, they may very well have got it on in Conundrum

"Inadvertently"? :lol::whistle:

"Casual Sex" I would imagine is something primarily done on the Holodecks.

If you just wanted to get off, who would bother trying to do a "friends with benefits" deal with anyone on the ship, when you could go to the Holodeck and replicate your ideal person to boink?

This begs the question: is the holodeck self-cleaning?

Of course it's self cleaning.
There is one of the episodes where
Someone, Riker or maybe Data
Says to someone, seems like it could have been a woman, that the ship is self cleaning.

I'm waiting for that function to become a reality.

They had split off their relationship soon before the series started didn't they?

Troi had her lovers and Riker had probably more women than Kirk. But we're married at the end of Nemesis.

So I don't think so-there was tension between them and a lasting empathetic bond but I don't think anything happened during the show.

If they were sleeping together even in a casual way the show would have implied that.

Yet in the Ferengi wormhole episode(the Price?) Riker talks about Troi as someone he had been with and remarks on how her current lover would be worthy or her or not(I don't recall the details)

Riker gives Worf his "blessing" to pursue a relationship indicating he remains close to her but that's it.

Worf is a pretty traditional guy and if Riker and Troi were in some sort of open polyamorous arrangement I don't think Riker would have cared if Worf was with Troi.

In the first episode there is closeness and longing between them, in the episode where Riker discovers his duplicate there is evidence Riker abandoned the relationship in favor of his career or at least put it off straining his relationship with Troi greatly.

There is more evidence that Picard slept with Beverly every other month(and that is spotty and subjective at best) than Riker and Troi sleeping together.

Riker has his girlfriends and Troi her lovers and while they are close and renew their relationship at the end of Nemesis and are married in the Beta novels I just don't see evidence of anything between them in the show.

I was thinking of that morning scene from "Man Of The People" where Deanna answers the door buzzer in her nightie and invites Riker in. That awesome grin on his face, I was fairly sure he was totally ready to let those crew evaluations slide for another hour or two...until he saw the ensign on the bed.

I couldn't stand it anymore and had to look up what the hell IIRC stands for. I feel better now.
Anyway I don't think Troi and Riker were having casual sex in the series. Though they still have intimate moments here and there, and are very fond of each other, I think their relationship was too genuine to be carrying on in a casual way.
I wonder though, if this had anything to do with Riker not wanting to advance in rank, maybe subconsciously. It wasn't until he finally got his girl back that he became Captain.
I agree with that, Stoner. He couldn't leave the Enterprise unless Deanna went with him.
