Well it happened to me...

My Xbox 360 finally got hit with the "red ring of death" exactly TWO years after buying this thing. Not surprisingly, the two year warranty I purchased when I bought it expired a month ago.:(

But all is not lost. I took a chance and traded it in at Gamestop along with all my games. The guy behind the counter didnt even bother to check it to see if it worked or not.

Between it, the extra controllers and the ton of games I had for it, I got enough to buy a PS3, Killzone 2, Resistance 1 & 2 and Uncharted.:techman:

I'll NEVER purchase another gaming system from Microsoft ever again!

It may have expired then, but once you got the RROD the original warranty was extended by 1 year, making it currently valid. In other words, you could have gotten it replaced for free.

At least you got something out of it. :techman:

To hell with it. When mine goes, I'll just have to pick up another one. It sucks, but the software is better than PS3 and the graphics are better than Wii.

I know how you feel, I'm on my 7th 360, the only reason i kept it and did not bin the entire lot was that i had invested so much money and time in their bloody peripherals and games at the time i stared getting these faults, i certainly will never look at another MS console after the 360 that's a certain.

Of course looking back now i must have had a hole in my head, i cant believe i bought a launch 360, then had it fixed 3 times, then when it failed a 4th time i went out and gave MS more money for a new 60gig only to have to get that replaced once via the shop and fixed once via MS........WTF was i thinking.

I think I've had it with my 360. It's just had the RROD for the third time, and frankly it's spent more time not working than being used to play games.

Mine RR'ed about a year ago. While the whole issue sucks, I do give MS kudos for how they handled it - they had sent me a box within a day or two and I get a new console back pretty quickly. I was out of gaming for about two weeks, total, which frankly I didn't consider a big deal.

If I do get RROD again, I might suck it up and buy one of the new models, which allegedly are far less likely to have the problem. I love my 360 too much to give up on it. :)

Well not to defend M$ because the RROD has been an issue but they seem to have solved it with the new Jasper chipset that has been out now for a year or so.

I have to say I enjoy my 360 much better than my PS3.

Sure it has some neat little bells and whistles over the 360 but as an over all experience the 360 is my system of choice.

The other night a friend and I was going to play UC2 MP and between the waiting for the site get find him and the sync process one it did about 8 min had passed.

It seem like EVERYTHING with the PS3 is a waiting process.

Load a game. Wait
Got a game update? wait, and wait and wait.
View a friends trophy list. Wait
Move from menu to menu. Wait (albeit only a few seconds but it's still wait).

Yeah it only took them almost 3 years from the launch of the 20gig 360 to release a version that did not fall over and die when you switched it on, and its certainly not cause to wipe away the BS they pulled with the previous versions and pat them on the back.

I for one learned a valuable lesson with MS and the 360, i would rather have a reliable system with a few games than a totally unreliable system with lots of games i cant play because its gone tits up again

MS can kiss my arse console wise in the future, they made far too much out of me this time to fall for their shoddy workmanship BS in the future.:techman:

I called the support number and the Indian dude I talked to kept telling me the warranty was expired and I woudl have to pay $100 to fix it. I hung up on him.

Rii, I was sweating bullets because I figure he would plug it in and see the RROD and tell me to get lost, but he didn't and just took it as is. I think he must have known it was messed up because he made the comment he has owned 7 of them in the last year and they were "crap". I kept my mouth shut, grabbed the PS3 games I wanted and ran out of there with my new system and games.

I like the PS3 so far. I cant wait to play "Infamous" (I'll be getting it next week when I get paid).

Assuming you made it clear to him the exact nature of the problem and that it had only been two years, he was feeding you BS.

Microsoft covers repairs for the three lights flashing red on the Ring of Light or the E74 error condition for a period of three (3) years from the original purchase date of the console.

Official XBOX support website

Whether it was intentional or out of ignorance, that guy shouldn't be working support if he can't provide an honest solution to such a common problem.

Chaos - Well microsoft DEFRAUDED me of $400 for a product that lasted two years. Plus I never told the guy it worked. I just took it and all the games to the counter and said I wanted to trade it in. Not my fault he didnt bother to check it.

The Indian guy named "Ryan" (yeah right) told me the three year warranty had expired and he did say the warranty was extended, but I would still have to pay $100 to get it fixed. I was like, "Dude what is the deal with the extended warranty you mentioned and he said there is one, but it is expired. I was like "What the hell are you talking about?" He was extremely confusing and made no sense. I asked to speak to an American and of course he told me, "This is a call center in India." (I figured that, but I asked anyway just in case this dude really was in the states) I then hung up on him.

You did make sure to tell him it had only been 2 years, right? That's some really crappy customer service. Sorry you had to suffer that.

Anyway, what's done is done. I hope you have fun with your new PS3! :techman:

Yep, I told him numerous times I bought the thing Dec 2007, but the fool didnt care. He just repeated the same mantra, "The warranty is expired, but we can fix it for $100."

I love the PS3. Yeah, I'm going to miss HALO, but I can always go next door to my neighbor and use his 3rd XBOX 360 (the first two got RROD). Stayed up most of the night playing Killzone 2.

Well the warranty only covers 3 RROD and the E74 error, that latter was added to the 3 year warranty scheme in 2009, MS have just washed their hands of any other faults which is nice of them...so I'm assuming the OP has suffered from 1 RROD which would mean its down to the customer to pay for the 360 to get repaired, which is a laugh seeing as most faults in the machine are due simply to bad design and overheating.

True. I just assumed Lookingglassman was talking about the 3-light error.

Just curious, why were you calling customer service? IIRC you can arrange to send in your console online by providing the serial #. That's how I did it, and it was incredibly easy.

Sounds like you got poor customer service, obviously, which is too bad, because your unit would have been replaced for free. But I'm glad you bought the PS3, sounds like a better fit for you. :techman:

You intentionally decieved them for personal gain. I think your God is gonna take a dim view of that when it's judgement time.
