Hi!

I am krsplat. My Trek profile is that I started watching Voyager and TNG as a kid, as a family passtime. More recently I signed up for TV streaming, and have watched all of the recent series Discovery and Picard, all of Voyager and part of DS9. So far, that's just a portion of the various series, but I'm just taking each episode one at a time.

I like fanfiction as well, I am writing a crossover story called Jazz Trek, which is combining Star Trek with the computer game Jazz Jackrabbit. Jazz Trek is not my original idea, it has been done before. Trek with rabbits and turtles. One day, I intend to write something more serious than just absurd, though.

I love writing too. I went to the Fanfic portion of the site but so far have only looked around.

I'm also a fan of Fanfiction. But I find Trek a lot harder to write than the other fandoms I'm interested in. I think it's because I neither have knowledge nor interest in military protocol, and while Star Trek presents itself as "totally not military" it's includes enough of the tropes to make it very challenging to write it for me.
All I came up with are civilian stories set in the Trek universe and each time I'm working on one of those, it ends up being so different from the shows that I decide to just strip the Trek trappings away and turn it into an original short story.
So I never managed to produce Fanfic for Trek.

I haven't tried to make a story that's compatible with canon, or a story that could realistically fit into the universe of the source material. I take some elements from Trek that inspire me, and ignore the rest. Unlike an officially licensed work, nobody's expecting my story to emulate the franchise's signature releases at a 1:1 ratio. Especially when it comes to a crossover fanfiction, it's implausible to reconcile all the differences between multiple fictional universes, without a great deal of compromise. And moreover, originality is a critical aspect of creativity. It makes more sense for an author to express their own ideas, than for an author to express the ideas from already-told story. There's a difference between inspiration and duplication.

I was cool with what you were saying until the last line. Star Wars Legends and Old Republic series were hardly duplicating anything. They were extending and expanding upon the universe within parameters set by canon.

One of my favorite Star Trek books is an anthology called "Tales from the Dominion War" and one of those stories I found great was the occupation of Betazed and the dynamics between Lwaxana and the Vorta assigned there. It is not "duplication" to explore what happens when a used-car oily pitchman for the Dominion goes up against the brutally honest Lwaxana in a sharply written dialogue that was almost the quality of a good play on Broadway.

I have also had the displeasure of proofing original SF and fantasy stories that were painful to read and lacked the polish and wit of a 7th grade boy in the 80's spouting off a D and D quest.

Great writing is great writing and crappy writing is crappy writing no matter if the parameters of the fictional universe were crafted originally by the current author or pre-created by TV/film media

Hello just saying hello

Huge fan, grew up in the 80s watching the TOS Films which flowed into TNG and the rest is history. Not a big fan of the kelvin universe though.

Now im off to find a thread to bash Discovery's use of the Klingons & start a fight about was more pointless Jake Sisko or Kes...... see you in the black

I sense a longtime lurker here lol

I thought I'd stop by and say hello. I'm Russ. I'm a tattooer/machine builder and big fan of the shows and movies. I look forward to learning much in this and to add in my two cents here and there. Without spewing out someone's idea. I come to this with no pre-conceptions or notions.

On the boring side of things I'm just a married guy, two cats, suburban home, two car garage, retired much an artist can be. If anyone cares to say hello for any reason please do. If you wanna call me on something I have to say, I'm always willing to learn.

Thanks for reading.

Hi there! I've posted a couple of newbie intro posts in other threads. I'm still finding my bearings on here, I think I'm doing pretty well so far .
Brand New to Trek. Just finished all of TNG and the films and now starting DS9. I'm realizing I probably should have started DS9 before I finished TNG, like when they simultaneously aired but that's okay. lol
Happily married, have a crazy lil toddler and love that I now have Star Trek to get lost in and enjoy when I need to wind down from my day while my husband clicks away playing LOL.

I do have a newbie question: Will someone explain how the ranking system works, with the banner matching/not matching, etc. I've noticed some match up and others do not, some are personalized. I'm a bit confused. If this isn't the right place to ask this question, I apologize and will gladly post where it is more appropriate.

Howdy! I was a long time member of Trek Web which I guess went kaput at some point (hadn't checked in eons). Also spent a lot of time on the WilliamShatner.com forum, as well as on Trekmovie.com, posting as Grizzlor or Greg2600. I could have sworn I'd signed up here at some point but may not have.

I've been a devoted fan since about age 11, which would have been around when FF got to cable, TNG was in Season 3, and the 25th anniversary was on the horizon. Unfortunately I have not seen much of the CBS AA shows, but remain a Trek fan.

Howdy, all. Oldest Trek memory is probably TAS in the late 70s which I preferred to TOS as I was six and cartoons were so much better than all that live action stuff. These days I prefer all the live action stuff and the animated shows not quite as much.

What I like about Trek is that you can choose your weapon depending on your mood, so sometimes I'll be all over 'A Taste Of Armageddon' and other times it'll be 'Battle At The Binary Stars' and so on.

I'm really happy to be a member of this community. My name's Richard and my first Trek experience was the TOS movies (1-6). I've seen every bit of Star Trek and broadly speaking I like it all, despite warts, new and old.

My first Star Trek exposure was with TOS. I’ve seen all the movies and most of the series. The one I’ve seen the least of is Deep Space 9. I really enjoy Star Trek, but i was never one to live and breathe anything no matter what it was, so I’m sure there are many things I don’t know and will probably have a lot of trivia type questions.

Hi guys. Been so long since I was here I tried to sign up again, but the machine never forgets!
Wanted to see if anyone can help me. I have a Trek thread running elsewhere that covers all aspects of the show from TOS to (eventually) PIC, LD and the new one. It has discussions on races, characters, best/worst episodes, pilots, Ferengi episodes, Klingons, women in Star Trek - you name it.

Question is two-fold: can I post this here and if that's a yes, then in which subforum should it be posted? It's meant to be a place where anyone who wants to can talk about any aspect of Trek or any of the posts I make, but where it is at the moment (general SFF forum) it's not getting a whole lot of attention. I think/hope people here might get more enjoyment out of it, and I'm having a great time writing it, just not so much in the lack of responses.

How say ye? Should I post or just haul it away in a garbage scow?

Thanks for any advice. Don't want to unintentionally step on toes (especially those of any Gorn!) or cause any offence.

I'm not exactly sure what you're asking...?

We have all kinds of fora here for different aspects of Trek: movies, shows, technology, books. You are free to start a thread anywhere that fits. This board is pretty specific in terms of topics. Explore and you'll see what I mean.

If you post here in General Trek, just be sure it's not a blog, but a discussion. Threads sink or swim based on member interest. For example, don't post more than twice in a row.

Lastly, we already have a "General Trek Questions and Observations" thread, so maybe your posts are better there, rather than starting a new one.
