Weed and other hobbies the "DIscovery" crew might/should have?

Since Captain Archer was weirdly into watching dudes in Speedos playing "water polo," maybe Discovery's captain could have a weird sports fixation as well, kind of as an homage to Archer. Maybe he could be obsessed with the sports career of OJ Simpson, for example. There could even be a time travel episode where the captain gets to go back and meet him.

From what I've heard, Juice is or is about to be out of prison, so I imagine that CBS could probably book an appearance.

Being fascinated by famous unsolved crimes and conspiracy theories in history - not just ours but alien ones. Not necessarily buying into all of them, though.

There are few angle's to this question. The first one being recreational drugs. I never use drugs myself, except OCD medicine but that's not for fun, but I know a lot people do so It makes sense to finally deal with this, because right now the only time trek even came close was Yar's famous "Just Say No" speech to Wesley Crusher and a few mentions of "chemicals" on DS9, all done during flashbacks to the Ocupation days. I also know making weed legal is important to a lot of people. sometimes it seems overly important if you didn't think about some of the other effects such as having cops target comunities of color or prisions created to make profit or even the need to focus on treatment instead just locking people up.

The other angle is they proably won't have a holodeck unless they use that proto holodeck used in the "TOS" cartoon. I think it would be intresting to see if they treat subspace communication much like a internet or if they use music in the show a lot. I wouldn't even mind if they used modern music like the Kelvin Universe did. Anything other than classical music. Nobody listens to that for fun. that exsit for people to apreciate but most people prefer to listen to rock or jazz or anything other than that.
I got to admit that I would also love to see Parresis Square finally shown after so many mention of it on 24th century trek.

I'd rather see them bust the drug dealers instead!

Despite some parties pushing for the legalization of marijuana, it's still banned in most counties because it's a harmful and addictive substance.

Tasha Yar tells you something important about narcotics like marijuana in "Symbiosis":

WESLEY: [. . .] What I can't understand is why anyone would voluntarily become dependent on a chemical.
DATA: Voluntary addiction to drugs is a recurrent theme in many cultures.
TASHA: Wesley, no one wants to become dependent. That happens later.
WESLEY: But it does happen. So why do people start?
TASHA: On my home planet, there was so much poverty and violence, that for some the only escape was through drugs.
WESLEY: How can a chemical substance can provide an escape.
TASHA: It doesn't, but it makes you think it does. You have to understand, drugs can make you feel good. They make you feel on top of the world. You're happy, sure of yourself, in control.
WESLEY: But it's artificial.
TASHA: It doesn't feel artificial until the drug wears off. Then you pay the price. Before you know it, you're taking the drug not to feel good, but to keep from feeling bad.
WESLEY: And that's the trap?
TASHA: All you care about is getting your next dosage. Nothing else matters.
WESLEY: I guess I just don't understand.
TASHA: Wesley, I hope you never do.

Unless someone is going to undergo a trauma that they use drugs to help bury that's one thing, but I'd rather not a Starfleet officer or crewmember be a recreational drug user--these are meant to be human being who have evolved beyond such things. As for recreation, well they PTB need to take a page from current navy ships for what people do to relax on long voyages without holodecks, but throw in some sci-fi-y elements as well (a zero-g gymnasium or hoverball court). When it comes to music then I want contemporary Andorian blues, Tellarite thrash metal, Rigellian pop, etc, why do they always need to listen to classic earth tunes (especially not the Beastie Boys)?
Not all Starfleet officers and crew are humans, heroin and weed might be totally harmless to an Andorian or even to a Vulcan. However sugar might space them out. Gluten might make them totally drunk, so no bread and no sweets for the aliens!

Marijuana (a.k.a. "weed") is a harmful and dangerous substance. Check DrugAbuse.gov > DrugFacts: Marijuana for extensive details. It is banned in most of the world, and is listed as a Schedule I drug (most severe category) by the DEA. This is not an "outdated world view" but a factual and present danger.

In most of the world, weed is never okay for an intake.

As for "being gay", check with the science professionals: On the Promotion of Homosexuality in the Schools and Homosexual Parenting: Is it Time for Change?

Finally, neuroscience reveals that a person's judgement and reasoning abilities continue to develop into his or her mid-twenties.

Have a nice day. :)

Huh… Kinda like me with chocolate then. Damn that sweet addictive plant!

Have someone talk about centuries past in North America in the ole USA, The War on drugs was replaced with The War on Obesity...

Your very first post (and only so far) on TrekBBS is this? Seriously?
Oh no, he's an old "friend" of ours with an axe to grind and lots of time on his hands to create duals and post huge TL;DR rants about his very specific pet peeves. I'd recommend that he get high and relax a bit, but then, you know...

That was probably the episode where I truly learned to loathe Wesley Crusher. And started hoping for a parallel-universe episode where Wesley is hopped on Andorran Synth-coke and sells slavegirls from Orion to afford his habit.

A few hundred years ago, indigenous Saami Shaman used to drink rain deer piss to get high.

(Rain deer eat Fly Agaric mushrooms, and the psychoactive ingredient passes in their urine without any of the toxins from the mushroom.)

How about the crew on the Discovery starts to drink rain deer piss to get high? Would you buy that?

Seems to make as much sense as them taking other (potentially) harmful substances from the past, like marijuana.

As for the lack of weed in Star Trek, Ive always figured that humans have either evolved past it. (Like Kirk smugly drinking synthohol and commenting on how advanced they are)

Or they use some new, mind blowing substances, that drug cartels of today can only dream of inventing and cornering the market on.

Yar's speech was one of the most heavy-handed and groan-inducing moments in all of Trek history.

I hope that Saru does a bong rip in his quarters with some other alien crew members and they note that weed is the best thing Earth ever produced. The lone human with them agrees.

It makes lots of sense for Saru to be into weed. SInce he seems to be very nervous because of being breed to sense death and was basically created to be hunted for food it makes sense that he would need to do things to relax or he could have a nervous breakdown.
