"We Boldly Go" - first commercial

Enough with the freakin' close-up character shots. We get it -- they're all over the posters, and each person has an individual "commercial" as well. Can we please see something more interesting. If Discovery's ad campaign is meant to turn people off, they're succeeding with flying colors.
What happened to "Star Trek is about the characters...not just 'pew - pew..."?

I mean - they have a Teaser with ships and battle footage...
Some fans whine: "Too much combat, I hope they have some character stories and drama.."

Then here's a teaser with a lot of the main characters being shown and a main character talking about how their mission isn't to conquer, but discover..."
Some fans whine: "Show us something else MORE interesting..." (like what, more ships, or perhaps...a battle?)

Yep - CBS can't win.

This one also cracks me up, how they make it look like a pure action and WAR show! I guess Trek has been doing that far before the first trailer to Star Trek Beyond ;)

To be fair - if you listen to what's said in this Trailer (IE specifically "Tonight") - it was a trailer shown the DAY OF the TNG 2 part premiere. We're still 7 weeks or so away from the CBS Network and All Access premiere.

Who knows what teasers we'll see between now and 9/24/17.

THAT version was, but there were promos that didn't say "tonight" which had the same footage/voiceover.

About the only thing I'd put money on right now is Discovery won't be as good as Game of Thrones or as bad as Lost in Space.

So the moral of the story is it'd be better with a healthy dose of The Dontaine...

Yeah, I know, I know, but...

I just never get tired of this. Don LaFontaine once did a voice-over for a Trek fan film:

I don't want dark and gritty. I also don't want a series about War. Too many sci-fi series seem to be focused on war and conflict. If I want human misery and pain with lots of casual sex I can watch "The Expanse". If ST: Disc fails it will be because people are tired of pessimism and want some optimism.

.....is that not what they've been promoting with DSC?

I don't understand how you can "discover" in the middle of a war. The comerical and the trailer are fine, but the premise is still about war with the Klingons.

That's not doing much good for all of the people who love Lost in Space but hate Game of Thrones.

So many things wrong with this statement. But I'll try to run them down:

1) We don't know what Discovery is like since we haven't seen it.
2) So we don't know if it's pessimistic
3) and we don't know if the focus is on the war with the Klingons or if that is just the impetus of the story
4) a war is not always portrayed as pessimistic, dark, and gritty. Some war stories can illustrate the triumph of the human spirit, or the value of hope and courage.
5) even if Trek is pessimistic and gritty, it doesn't mean it will fail.
6) I'm not sure where you get the idea that people are "tired of pessimism and want optimism." Some of the best and most popular films and TV shows of the past 10 years are dark, bleak, gritty, and depressing. Here's a few examples from the past 12 months: Game of Thrones, Westworld, Logan, Dunkirk, Better Call Saul, True Detective, Fargo, Twin Peaks... I could go on.

It's not a zero sum game either, we can have fun movies and shows and less optimistic movies and shows at the same time, and they can both be successful.

I too want an optimistic Trek, but saying it will fail if it's pessimistic is simply ludicrous.

All audiences really want compelling stories with solid acting, engaging characters and good drama or comedy. In my opinion, if Discovery doesn't succeed it will be because it fails at one or more of those things.
