"We Boldly Go" - first commercial

BTW this is NOT the first commercial. DSC commercials have been playing now on TV for about 2 weeks.

This is a 40sec motion teaser. We didn't get any character motion vids today.

They didn't really show much. Phasers, a close-up of someone's eye. They don't really tell you much. That's why I called this the first 'real' commercial. You actually see the people.

This kind of teaser trailer works well if you know the characters, e.g. Game of Thrones and Walking Dead have done it effectively for advanced seasons -- BUT NOT THE FIRST SEASON.

No. For a first brief spot this is fine.

Enough with the freakin' close-up character shots. We get it -- they're all over the posters, and each person has an individual "commercial" as well. Can we please see something more interesting. If Discovery's ad campaign is meant to turn people off, they're succeeding with flying colors.
I'm sure we will see more specifics soon enough -- i.e., with actual production scenes that give us a more explicit idea of the story they are telling...
....but I have no problem with this teaser for what it is; it's fine.

Honestly, they really don't even need to give us a preview that begins to explain the story. All they need to do is show us it is Star Trek and give us some sense for what the tone and feel of the show will be.

From that, people will decide to watch or not watch. Knowing overall story details ahead of time won't make a difference (although I think I'd still like to see some ahead of time, just because I'm greedy).

Right, because this was SOOO much better.

First, that is completely different than the Discovery teaser. Note that it actually INTRODUCES the characters, instead of trying to be deep and artsy and just showing them out of context. Second, it was played immediately before the premiere started (hence the "Tonight, the 24th century begins" opening).

Even so, you're damn right that was so much better for us in 1987. It showed us the tech, characters, ships, villains, etc... and made the imminent show more interesting. I get that the last Discovery trailer did too, but at this point the "one and done" attitude is frustrating. Enough of the freakin' secrecy. This is a TV show, not national security.

There's a little over a month left till the premiere. This type of ad should have appeared months ago. But as I mentioned in my previous post, the going thing is keeping secrecy until the last minute. And it's frankly stupid.

Lengthy ad campaigns for new TV series don't run for three or four months prior to premiere.

The first broadcast TV spots for TNG began one month before its first availability.

I expect that the big ad campaign for Discovery will begin on or around August 25-28.

No, it really, really wasn't. It was like "Star Trek: The X-Men Edition".

"Data.....the android"
"Troi...THE TELEPATH!"
"Geordi....CAN SEE THROUGH YOUR THOUGHTS"

It was silly and we laughed at it.

Well, your opinion and my opinion about what happened in 1987 differ. Given that it was the first new TV Trek in almost 20 years and gave us a whole new Universe to enjoy, I'm going to wager that yours was likely in the minority.

So, i watched it, and still don't know anything more about the show than before.

Lol!! That brought a smile to my face. But what's funnier....is that I probably thought that was really exciting back in the eighties. Pretty laughable by today's standards.

I remember a print ad for TNG featuring Tasha Yar that read, "Sugar and spice, and then she breaks your arm." :rommie:

Here are some of those early TNG promos:

No, not really. And I have proof. That first season of TNG was laughable. Were we excited? Yes. Did we take it seriously at first? Nooooooooooooooooo.

Below are flyers that were handed out at a Star Trek con in NYC around third season of TNG. You say that people loved it. No, sorry, Trek cons were filled with people that despised TNG.

So, sorry, it's not an opinion. This is how people really felt about it at first.

Well, geez. Some people at Trek cons hated it. I guess you got me.

That's almost as bad as people registering their discontent on some internet message board.

This trailer was their attempt to acquaint new audiences to the various characters. This is a common (and solid) marketing tactic that gives nothing away, but is intended to make people want to learn more about these characters.

I'm not sure why that would be a turn off to you. Maybe avoid it when you're in bed with your significant other, I guess?

As for it "not telling you what it's about"-- keep in mind we're still 2 months out. This is not meant to be a commercial for the pilot itself or a true trailer. This is a build-up/buzz-garnerning promotional spot to let broader audiences know it's coming.

For comparison's sake, here's the original promo for TOS, which like this DSC spot effectively sets the tone without saying or showing much of anything.

Here's a similar one for TNG, which shows NOTHING from the actual show, opting instead to impress with scenes exclusively from the films, which at best is misleading, and worse, false advertising...

Here's a series of ones from DS9 that are all incredibly vague. But skip to :53 to see one very similar to this DSC spot, showing quick glimpses of the various characters while talking more about the tone of the series than the story.

Now, maybe none of these get you excited either, maybe they too turn you off, but the point here is that these types of spots are common, and probably not aimed at the likes of you and me, who have been following the development of this show for the past 2 years.
