News WB/Paramount merger talks

No way.

PT stumbled over what Lucas thought people liked about Star Wars while giving bare bones characters who must become a certain way..I might disagree with the ST but I'm more in to THE ST as a story.

The prequel trilogy could have been amazing if Lucas found someone else to write his damn scripts (and directed the movies). The flaw is in execution. But structurally speaking, it's a solid idea for a character arc. Most importantly, Anakin's journey is very different from Luke's. He was trying to tell a Miltonian story about a decline into evil. It was just hamfisted and stupid in execution.

With the exception of The Last Jedi (which is a great 90-minute movie with another hour of unworkable scenes tacked on), the ST is creatively bankrupt, relying on nostalgia porn for things we liked about the OT. Worse is that it essentially destroyed the OT's meaning as a story, since it implies that all of the victories against the empire were completely hollow, and everything just became shit again.

Regardless, in general I give more credit to something which aims high and makes big fuckups than something which shoots for mediocrity. Which is why I can say even though I don't enjoy the PT (I even think Revenge of the Sith is a bad movie), I do respect what Lucas was attempting.

No "we" here.

Completely disagree.

I respect what he tried.

It is still a terribly done story with characters I don't give a shit about from start to finish. That's no small feat.

Shari Redstone is launching a formal auction of National Amusements, the holding company that controls struggling media giant Paramount Global.

BDT Capital Partners, the bankers for Redstone, the 69-year-old daughter of late media baron Sumner Redstone, have begun circulating nondisclosure agreements to private-equity firms to view National Amusements’ financials — widening the search for prospective bidders which thus far have included Warner Bros. Discovery.

Skydance Backers Explore All-Cash Deal to Gain Control of Paramount

CEO Ellison, his father, Larry, and other investors are in talks to buy Redstone’s stake in National Amusements, Paramount’s parent.

David Ellison as the owner of Star Trek has potential. It could potentially be the best path forward for Star Trek.
Skydance produced "Reacher", "Top Gun Maverick" and "Altered Carbon" season 1.

On the other hand, Skydance produced "Star Trek Into Darkness", "Star Trek Beyond", "Altered Carbon" season 2, and Foundation.

I don't hate ST09 at all. My point is Abrams hasn't done anything since The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, and that hardly covered him in glory. He's diminished in many's eyes as a result, both in prominence and reputation.

I’m pretty sure that isn’t remotely true.

It all depends upon how active he wants to be in the franchise.

He might just leave Kurtzman in place while he himself focuses on the wonky M&A stuff at the corporate level.

I don't think he'd see a need to rock the boat. Regardless of some fanboy whining, the current era of Trek is by all accounts a successful one.

I do think Skydance have a much better chance of acquiring Paramount than WBD do, from a regulatory standpoint.

I also just read the article, it does seem that out of the Paramount suitors — Skydance is the most favorable for Trek as a franchise.
