Watching all Trek chronologically

^Yes, I really liked Shore Leave for random funniness. The Kirk Score counts the number of women he kisses.

I really liked this episode, because it's very funny, but also pretty scary. Tralane was a really interesting character, and it's fairly obvious that he was the inspiration for Q. Even Data's description of the relation between Q and Picard as that between a master and his pet was in here. That relation is of course what the suspence comes from, as children can sometimes be very cruel towards animals. The way he welcomed the french and german redshirts was very funny, especially the dance he did for the german one ("Eins, zwei, drei, vier! Gehen wir mit den schissgewehr!":rommie:). It is also apparently "Dress the Yeomen up as Princesses"-week.
I really liked all Trelane's costumes and how he pretended it was the 19th century and stuff, but the coolest thing he did was using the planet as a bumper car.

^ The Squire of Gothos was also an obvious inspiration for Futurama's "Where No Fan Has Gone Before". :)

Man, I feel so sorry for you. Liking, or at least tolerating my love of sci-fi is a prerequisite for ANY romantic relationships. Back in the mid-80s, I was engaged to a girl who HATED sci-fi...she was just prejudiced. After seeing "Star Trek III", she actually became a fan! Reason being was Christopher Lloyd as Kruge. She was a HUGE fan of "Taxi" & just loved that guy. Needless to say, she also loved the "Back To the Future" films for the same reason. Of course, she ended up loving "Star Trek IV" as well. The woman I later married was a sci-fi fan to begin with, which was great. The girl I'm seeing now is also a fan. If the girl absolutely, positively REFUSES to even consider looking at a sci-fi film or TV series, then she's not too intelligent to boot. That's one reason more men are fans of the genre than women...science scares them, whereas men, though not fully understanding the "science" in sci-fi are willing to learn to further their enjoyment (which is what I do). Men like to learn things, even if they're complex & won't end up comprehending them anyway. When it comes to science, in my experience (unless it's biology)women tend to shy away from it. Ever wonder why there are more male astronauts & astronomers than female? Now you know!

I haven't got much time to write the review (Blackadder Rides Again is about to begin), so I'll add to it later this evening.
I hated this episode for being boring and very overdramatic. The fight (Which was really, REALLY bad. I'm surprised by the quality of most fights I see during TOS as I remember them all bad, but this one is much worse then I remebered it. I laughed at the complete stupidity of it) was really stupid, and Kirk could've just ran away (or even walked away, as the Gorn had a topspeed of about 3 km/h). Him complaining there are no weapons was also rather sttupisd when the planet is littered with sticks, rocks, gigantic diamonds, and ropes.
(I'll write the rest of the review later)

There is a very aptly named youtube video of this fight named "The Worst fightscene ever."
I also noticed the Federation being named for the first time. So I guess the Earth-bases and stuff are a thing of the past now.
The idea of the Gorn planning to invade the Federation should've been followed up, though. I know arcs weren't very common in the 60's, but still. It could've been fun, provided they don't get into hand-to handbattles with the Gorn.
I remember hearing something about the Gorn originally being the ace up the Dominion's sleeve that eventually became the Breen.

I'm stopping this review thread. It's mainly because if I'm watching an episode I'm going to review I often find that I'm thinking what I'm going to say instead of actually enjoying the episode. And since I watch Star Trek because I enjoy it, that's unacceptable. I also have less spare time as university started, and these reviews usually take about half an hour to write.
I want to thank everyone who read my reviews.

Well that's a pity but I understand how you feel, it can be difficult to relax and enjoy an episode when you're constantly focusing on what you like and don't like about it.

well, that's a shame. I liked reading your thoughts. I know what you mean though, I just started fall semester as well.

And Arena Rocks. The opening battle on cestus III is one of the more visually impressive scenes in the series. I agree the fight is lacking in some respects, but shatner sells it. The Gorn is an icon and one of the better aliens on the show. I also like the ending with the metron guy.

I do admit the episode drags in places.

Well, if you are not getting the pleasure out of watching the episodes because you are thinking about how to review, I don't blame you. Watching them should be for pleasure and not out of obligation.

I just want to thank you for inspiring several of us to do the same. I was in the middle of going through all of TNG when I first saw your post. It inspired me to watch starting with Enterprise. I am turninng around the DVDs as fast as Netflix can send them to me.

Thank you for your reviews and inspiration. We all appreciate it!

TOS season 1 review (so far):
I have only watched a couple of TOS episodes before, so most eps I saw were new for me. Though there were a few very good ones, I found most of it so far mediocre. It has so far improved my opinion of Kirk, though, who I found much more likable then I remembered.
N.B.: In the statistics below, The Menagerie counts as two episodes.
Season Score: 5
(ENT Season 1: 6,5
ENT Season 2: 5,5
ENT Season 3: 8
ENT Season 4: 7)
Average Score: 5,8
(ENT Season 3 (Since "Proving Ground"): 7,46
ENT Season 4: 6,23)
Best Episode: The Squire of Gothos
Worst Episode: Mudd's Women (I gave Arena a lower score, but I at least found that so bad it was funny)
Number of bad episodes (0-4): 4
Number of average episodes (4-6,5): 9
Number of good episodes (7-10): 7

BTW, if anyone wants to watch all Trek chronological and do their own review thread, please go ahead. I have no copyright on the idea.

In the case of DS9 you pretty much have to watch them in order and you can't miss any of them.

Much as I HATE to nitpick (NOT!) I checked the stardates of TOS & TAS & MUCH to my suprise, the stardate for the TAS episode "Magicks of Megas-Tu" is actually BEFORE "Where No Man Has Gone Before"...weird.

Roddenberry said at some of the early conventions that stardates were a expression not just of time and date, but of ship's position as well. He changed that later.

I agree the fight is lacking in some respects, but shatner sells it.

Sorry, but I disagree with you sir. I just re-watched it on youtube and it's bad. The Gorn obviously has a bad case of flem. Kirk's home made cannon isn't even pointed at the Gorn when it fires.

Did you notice that the big rock the Gorn throws at Kirk, is the same exact rock the traps Spock leg during "The Galileo Seven"?
