Was Kirk ever re-instated to Admiral

No, and it would have been odd if they had let him have the rank back, after the Genesis Planet incident. He was lucky he wasn't thrown out of Starfleet and jailed. Same goes for most of the other members of the crew, who helped to sabotage another Starfleet ship (the Excelsior) as well.
Sulu managed to get his own command (Excelsior, none the less) after the incident. You'd think assisting the good admiral with his plan would be a halter on any prospects of obtaining command of a garbage scow, much less one of the most advanced ships in the fleet.

At the end of The Search for Spock, Kirk is busted to captain. Was he ever re-instated to Admiral? Was he still a captain in Generations?

As I recall, Kirk was busted at the end of The Voyage Home, not The Search for Spock.

You are correct. My addling brain fails me again.

Someday, I will meet you all in a nursing home. I am counting on you to cover my @$$.

And the only reason he didn't get busted down to ensign and thrown into prison was because he saved the entire world.

If you saved the world and still get demoted, you've probably made a mistake you're not likely to shake off. Kirk died a Captain, but that's the rank he probably always wanted on his tombstone anyways.

Yup, he was definitely a Captain through to the end. However, in the DirecTV commercial he was in, the rank devices they had on his tunic were definitely not of the Fletcher design:

They look like two U.S. Army Sergeant devices placed end-to-end with some kind of circular thing over them. It was good to see him back in uniform doing some new lines as Kirk, though.

I never noticed this in the commercial, but looking at the still, it looks like his sideburns are wrong, too. (And how sad am I for noticing that??)

Now that you point that out, I see what you mean. Me, in all my glory as Capt. Oblivious, didn't even notice the off rank insignia.

I seriously doubt Kirk would ever accept a promotion to Admiral again, nor would Starfleet ever consider elevating him to flag rank, taking into account his conviction on disobeying a direct order from a superior officer. Most military institutions frown on that. Besides, being a Captain leaves him free to kick ass......Admirals don't command individual ships!

Huh...you're right! He doesn't have the pointy Starfleet Academy 'burns there. Too funny. I guess I was too distracted by the rank insignia fubar. You can't see it in this pic, but the arrowhead insignia is also around 2/3 the size it should be as well.

Not that the jumpsuit on the background would look all that genuine, either. Look at the chest. Too white, too thin a material, the vertical black lines at shoulders are either missing or too weak, and were the collars ever that low?

It's a bit odd. Why was the commercial considered worth doing if the studio couldn't provide the original uniforms? One'd think that faking them would be an unacceptable expense.
