Was Kirk ever re-instated to Admiral

At the end of The Search for Spock, Kirk is busted to captain. Was he ever re-instated to Admiral? Was he still a captain in Generations?

I don't think so. I do distinctly remember him telling Picard to never let them promote him. Therefore, I think Kirk remained a captain in Generations.

He's still wearing Captain's bars on his uniform at the start of Generations, if memory serves.

And Capt Harriman calls Kirk "Captain" on the Bridge of the Enterprise-B after the ribbon hits and he's low on ideas.

"Captain Kirk, I would appreciate any suggestions you might have."

Well he 'retired' in Star Trek VI as Captain. Even if he had stayed on I doubt he would have made the same mistake again and accepted promotion.

It's often speculated that Kirk's advice to Picard in Generations is the reason why Picard has remained a Captain.

^ I've always liked that notion, myself, even though Picard is against the idea of promotion to admiral as far back as 1st season TNG ("Coming of Age").

It is Posable that Kirk was made a tombstone Admiral after his death be in cannon he remained a capt

Did the American navy (and by fictional extension Starfleet) never have the tradition of bumping a visiting Captain to commodore ?

No; it's just one of those things Robert Heinlein thought would be cool and fans accepted without skeptical inquiry.

I doubt Kirk would ever have been given the chance to accept or decline. He was busted in rank because he stole and destroyed a starship. Starfleet ain't going to forget that one. And by the time of the Khitomer peace, Kirk the Klingon Slayer would be more a liability than an asset for Starfleet anyway, so honoring him postmortem might be a politically unacceptable stunt, too.

(Although it's not as if Kirk really had that many Klingon ears hanging from his belt. The only ones he ever killed on screen were Kruge and one of his henchmen, plus two and a half shipfuls: "Errand of Mercy", "Day of Dove", ST3. And the first and last were probably very small ships, while the casualties on the middle one were largely the doing of an evil alien entity.)

As I recall, Kirk was busted at the end of The Voyage Home, not The Search for Spock.

You are correct. My addling brain fails me again.

Someday, I will meet you all in a nursing home. I am counting on you to cover my @$$.

Yup, he was definitely a Captain through to the end. However, in the DirecTV commercial he was in, the rank devices they had on his tunic were definitely not of the Fletcher design:

They look like two U.S. Army Sergeant devices placed end-to-end with some kind of circular thing over them. It was good to see him back in uniform doing some new lines as Kirk, though.

No, and it would have been odd if they had let him have the rank back, after the Genesis Planet incident. He was lucky he wasn't thrown out of Starfleet and jailed. Same goes for most of the other members of the crew, who helped to sabotage another Starfleet ship (the Excelsior) as well.
