Was it ever really possible for Voyager to be "Epic"?

American history called folks like that pioneers and those like Lewis& Clark were epic enough to still be taught in schools across the country to this day.

Those guys were on an official mission to chart out the continent that would be the housing for the expansion of the Nation, VOY's "mission" was to run away as fast as possible from everything to get back to safety on Earth. It was the OPPOSITE of Lewis and Clark if anything.

But why? If only their survival had been written to be more of a continuos struggle, overcoming those odds could have been epic, at least IMO.

The survival of one ship that has no one important onboard, takes part in no important adventures, does nothing for the safety/future survival of the Galaxy

VS

2 series of brave Captain who save the Galaxy from terrible threats and 1 series of a war for the survival of civilization against a powerful foe who wants to do nothing but conquer your entire Galactic Quadrant.

Yeah, VOY sounds SO much more "epic" than any of that...

Even threshold?

Sorry which episode is that? :P

Hasn't that got the rare honour of being not classed as canon?

Hell no.

I may be the only person anywhere that liked Threshhold, but one word, just adding one word almost anywhere in the episode would have made it perfect, and that word is...

"Cthulhu".

or maybe a scene at the end with Janeway and Paris changing their lizard babies diapers which we see that they are keeping in an arboretum down on the lower decks.

Let's see we can travel at Warp 10 and get home in seconds. The side affect is that we evolve into something new, but wait a minute we can reverse it. The EMH won't be affected by it so he can Starfleet Medical what to do.

Engage Warp 10, we are home.

End of show.

They couldn't steer.

Our friends aboard Voyager would have quickly overshot the galactic rim and then their new mission would be to return to any galaxy rather than starve to death in the intergalactic void.

Yeah, I guess that's why Janeway tells the crew in "Caretaker" that they going to take time to explore and chart the DQ while trying to find a way home. Not finding the fastest way home is why Seska joined the Kazon & turned Michael Jonas traitor. If Janeway wanted to get home faster, she would have agreed to stealing the time folding device in season 1.

How many cups of Hater-Aid did you drink today?
Janeway stopped the invasion of Species 8472 and continued invasions of the Borg.
How is that not epic?
Janeway brings home one of the first humans to ever be assimilated with her humanity restored.
How is that not epic?
Seriously, how can anyone be blind to tactical, techincal & medical info Voyager brings home that greatly would advance things in the AQ. Janeway will do for the 24 century what Starling did for the 21st.

And folks called her on it as a sign she was a bad Captain who didn't care about her crew for wanting to do so instead of just running back to Earth.

And whenever they DID anything epic like that, the only reaction was "They're too important, they shouldn't be able to do things like that."

Same thing with how they had a cure for the Vidiian Phage, or stopping the Krenim Timeship, or nearly being able to make an agreement to work with the Kazon. Every single god-damned time it was "They're too important".

You just can't win.

The arm chair warriors do not determine what is "epic" within the Trek universe itself. Just as it doesn't matter who does or doesn't like the Star Wars prequels, the story of how Anakin became Darth Vader will still remain the same and epic within that universe. Our opinions do not change the facts within canon.

You can win when you understand the fans don't always have the finale say.

History seems to disagree, all we hear nowadays about VOY are nothing BUT the ravings of disgruntled fans.

If I were to rate the whole of VOY I would give it a C, decidely average. Yes it had its good episodes, but I found most episodes at best average. It was just far too hit and miss in terms of episode quality for my liking. But each to their own.

Since when do the common folk write history?
History is written by those in power, that would be Paramount. Not us.
Listening to the fans, you'd think Voyager was the worse show to ever hit broadcast TV.
How many years did folks send hate mail to B&B before they found out their is a chain of command within business? There are those that spout hate for Voyager simply over what Seven wears.

I'm perfectly gruntled because no one has seen the episodes between the phage and Fury, and the last 14 years were hidden from any skeevy fanimousity.

Voyager wasn't written by those in power, for the most part it wasn't written by anyone, because Berman kept retconning all the episodes they had stamped onto video tape that most of what we saw was inconsequential balls mirror Voyager.

I mean honestly, the "Space Babe in hot costume" thing is such an old concept for Sci-Fi I don't see why VOY gets flack for it more than anyone else.

Because most aren't old enough to remember Wilma Dearing or Emma Peel, while the rest are convinced that Trek is some high brow show to spite the high overtones of sexuality and quirkiness Gene infused it with. Some how we've erased from our minds the naked butt cracks we saw in "The Naked Now" or that planet Riza exists in this universe.

So, it's clear then that you DO need something more than "Go Home" to make the show worthwhile right? It just isn't enough on its own to last 7 years.

Remember the episode of Seinfeld where they kept trying to drive their car after the gass gage hit empty on the motorway for thrills?

Tuvok "Oh deary me. I am agog with perplexity. I may sound monotone but i assure you that for a Vulcan I need to change my starfleet issue shorts... We are lost in the Delta Quadrant. Lost Doomed. Lost."

Janeway "You call that lost? Lost? That ain't lost! We're just out for a fricking stroll, back by teatime, lets reeeeeally see what this ship can do... Set course for the damn Epsilon Quadrant! I'll show you lost!"

Tuvok "But captain, there is no Epsilon Quadrant."

Janeway "Apologist! Slacker! When I give you an order, you do it or I'll stick my foot up your ass. We've gone further out than anyone before us and that's a good start but lets face facts, we didn't get here because he have balls of steel and true grit we're here because a moron mistook us for a gimp it wanted to make babies with, and I personally don't want to get a medal for being raped by a space hillbilly, I want a medal for exploring the unknown and going where no woman has gone before, so lets chart the bloody universe and our great grandchildren can hand it in to Starfleet Command whenever."

...

On the matter of Carrie Fisher, I shit you not, the Mormons funded a decent chunk of Starwars, and they had some reservations about promoting too much sex to teenagers so they stipulated that there was to be no blond big boobed cock tease as the female lead. But even after Carrie was cast, George was still a little worried that those religious nuts would pull his funding halfway through shooting and so ordered a grip to tape the Princesses breasts down till she seemed almost prepubescent with the immortal words "No Jiggling in the Empire."

I had a vast post typed up, full of bluster and comparisons and all that smart data-Jazz.

This sums it up though: A Female Captain brought them home and 'took' a seat at the table of the Epic heroes, looked them in the eye and challenged their hegemony.

If we gleaned anything from the vast mess and riddle of the C-20th, it was that women waged their own wars and won battles, lost some too and still fight now and will keep fighting in new, ingenious ways. From a dude who bares his teeth at unjust treatment, Janeway, Seven and Torres were role-models.

An Epic should inspire courage, wisdom, hope and fearlessness, yeah?

Well, I saw a group of characters who survived bad writing, bad cooking, the nastiest enemies in Trek and who are still being argued about ten years after the (yikes) finale.

There's material enough that in a century, others will likely still argue about it. An "Epic" is a tale of a heroic journey. Say what you will about time-travel, nanites and 'that' corset, it was a clear, fulfilled journey that lives on beyond the limits of the TV.

Also, Gardner, never lose that classiness... "No jiggling in the Empire." Sweet Jeebus... :guffaw:
