Was a Phase 2 pilot ever made?

I read somewhere that sets and models were created for Phase 2. I've seen photos of them before. But the article I read said they couldn't find a network so it was canceled. Did they ever shoot or start shooting a pilot?

Well, at the very least, they did shoot test footage. Some really nice looking test footage, if you ask me. You can see most of it here.

In a sense, the Phase II pilot was made, and it was called Star Trek: The Motion Picture. The movie's script was a rewrite of the pilot script, "In Thy Image." And most of the movie's Enterprise sets were upgraded versions of the very sets that were built for Phase II. That's why those sets (or at least their basic framework) lasted long enough to be used on several movies, then remodeled and used for TNG for seven years, then remodeled again and used for Voyager for seven more years. Feature film sets are flimsy, built to be used for a few days or weeks and then torn down. But TV-series sets are built to last for years. So you're essentially looking at the Phase II sets every time you watch TMP, TWOK, TSFS, TNG, or VGR.

Weren't some of the VGR sets redressed as Enterprise-E sets as well? Not sure if any were the sets that had originally been made for Phase II.

^Probably some things like corridors and crew quarters. Surely some of the TNG sets were reused in TFF and TUC, which is why the E-A's warp core looks just like the E-D's. And the President's office in TUC was a redress of Ten Forward.

When the Voyager sets were torn down - the first time the soundstage was completely cleared (for "Enterprise") - some of the structural framework, now suffering wood rot, was still clearly marked with the dates of "Phase II".

The Phase II footage is usually compared to Logan's run and that's exactly what I see as well. There's something about early to mid 70s film-stock and how things were lit during that time that is kind of dull as well. The 60s-inspired production design just doesn't pop like TOS anymore.

I think everything they did when converting PII to TMP was the right move, and even though the pajamas aren't very good, they had to at least try something besides just recreating TOS uniforms almost verbatim.

Despite the problems with TMP and its reputation of almost killing the franchise, if PII had actually gone ahead as planned I think it wouldn't have lasted long and the franchise probably would have died with it.

I'm comfortable leaving Space: 1999 as the pinnacle of pre-Star Wars sci-fi in the 70s where it can display its leisure suits and bell-bottoms with pride.

I seem to remember reading there was to be some additional PII material on the TNG S2 BD set. I never picked that season up because of the HTV Illuminate situation. Was that the case and if so what was it?

I just hope that wouldn't have been the final make-up for Xon's ears. I'm always impressed with Nimoy's Spock ears, the seams in the make-up are well hidden usually.
