Warpath Aftermath

Hobyman

Ensign

Greetings,

Apologies if this is mentioned elsewhere in this forum--I looked around and saw no information, so thought I would simply ask. When does the book after Deep Space Nine: Warpath come out? Warpath came out in March of 06, so it's been almost a year and a half...do we know when this will actually be released? :)

I suppose I may have missed it coming out, and if so please let me know the name so I can look it up? Thanks for all of your help!

Fearful Symmetry by Olivia Woods is slated for release in July 2008. It was originally supposed to come out this year, but was delayed due to a change of author.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

The DS9 relaunch had a lot of potential, but I think they're really shooting their readership in the foot with this release schedule the last few years. I'm very disappointed with the way things have turned out lately.

^ I disagree.

The release schedule is fine. It has been just about one book a year, this one was only delayed because of unforeseen circumstances.

"Had" a lot of potential?

Dude, they're 21 installments into the damned thing. It's not like they realized two books and the whole thing died out like Challenger.

Yeah that seemed like a misplaced comment...perhaps more describing the disapointing Voyager relanch. The DS9 books has been excellent since its first book "Avatar Part I" and kept on entertaining and introducing interesting story possibilities ever since. The release date of Fearful Symmetray must be the most asked question of a novel release date ever in Trek Lit, I've lost count of how many threads on this question there has been, which i suppose is a great thing for Pocket Books since it means there is a ton of fan interst. I'm not too upset about any publishing schedualing since there have been other Trek novels to keep my interest piqued but I am getting eager to read Fearful Symmetray, might be due to the cliffhanger ending to Warpath!

So how different will it be, then? (I assume that a "change of author" means that at least some rewriting was done?)

No, why would you think that? It'll be the exact same manuscript, word for word, except the new author will have to type it up and change the name on the title page. It causes a yearlong delay because of all the red tape and paperwork, you see.

(For those of you failing to detect the sarcasm here, I recommend you adjust the gain on your ACME Sarcasm-Detectors to maximum. Reminder: These go to eleven!)

I have to admit that I am disappointed with the release schedule of Star Trek books. The one book per year for each series of books (not including the anniversary years) is annoying but it shows in the work that it's probably a good idea as the books are very entertaining to read. Although it would be nice to see maybe two books per year. But you can't argue with what they're doing as it is working. Newer Star Trek books are moving faster than the newer Star Wars books, or at least it looks like they are.

I am very eagerly waiting for Fearful Symmetry to come out. So I hope this delay is going to ensure a high quality book.

Geez, I'm sorry I opened my big YAPPER already. :(

This got me thinking - and I took a look at the release schedule.

'SEASON 8' *

2001 - Avatar Book 1, Avatar Book 2, Section 31: Abyss, Gateways: Demons of Air and Darkness, Gateways WLB: Horn and Ivory

2002 - Mission Gamma: Twilight, Mission Gamma: This Grey Spirit, Mission Gamma: Cathedral, Mission Gamma: Lesser Evil

2003 - Rising Son, Unity

'SEASON 9' *

2004 - WoDS9: Cardassia, WoDS9: Andor

2005 - WoDS9: Bajor, WoDS9: Trill, WoDS9, Ferenginar, The Dominion

2006 - Warpath

2007 - NONE

2008 - Fearful Symmetry

It is somewhat annoying that we got 'Season 8' in three years, and the run of 'Season 9' is taking four years and counting (although it feels like we're building up to the season finale atm, so maybe not too much more counting).

However, I echo the above sentiment that the wait is worth it as I'd rather have a well written installment than a lacklustre one.

* - I know that the Powers don't like us to refer to them as 'Season 8' and 'Season 9', but it makes things easier for me to think about.

It is disappointing to me too. I mean why say your going to release a book and then have to change it due to unforseen problems. I know I have played catch up on getting all of the relaunch books. There is a few I still need but I have most of the recent ones and everything earlier, so I'm pretty much caught up.

This feels like a long cliffhanger that will never end. I guess I just was excited about Warpath when I was reading it, that I was ready for the next book.

Same thing occurred with New Frontier. It started off with a lot of books within a couple of years (although it helped to have crossover books with Double Helix and Captain's Table during that period) before slowing down the release rate (despite the inclusion of another crossover book with Gateways) and now it's on the slow path along with the post-"What You Leave Behind" Deep Space Nine books.

The unforeseen problems are just that: unforeseen. They had intended to get a DS9 relaunch book out in 2007, but problems beyond their control prevented it. That list is also missing a few titles, both relaunch and non. We had Hollow Men, The Left Hand of Destiny, Book One, The Left Hand of Destiny, Book Two, and Saturn's Children during the 2003-2006 period. In addition to Fearful Symmetry, there is also the Terok Nor trilogy and probably another DS9 MU story in Shards and Shadows.

True. That's what I'm missing, is the Left Hand of Desting series and Hollow Men. I have enjoyed the relaunch and makes me feel like I was watching an episode at times.

I'm not sure I count some of the novels you mentioned, Smiley, as DS9 Relaunch.

Yeah, the NF situation is similar, it's very frustrating. I did, however, see a listing for the next NF novel on Amazon the other day, albeit title-less.

I think that listing is bogus. It was brought up in another thread, and considering there has been no official announcement (from either Pocket Books or from Peter David) about an upcoming New Frontier story, I'm inclined to not put much stock in the listing, especially considering Amazon has been known to have bogus entries of this sort in the past.

I'm definitely disappointed, too. I can see how things are becoming more complicated as there are more and more series to juggle. Since Pocket is now only releasing one mass-market per month (aside from re-prints), it seems like most will only get one novel per year.

12 months in a year... how many on-going Trek series do we have in the lit world?
TOS
TNG
DS9
VOY
ENT
NF
SCE
TTN
VGD
Gorkon/Klingon Empire

It's awfully croweded in the Trek lit world right now. That isn't necessarily a bad thing - there's a ton of diversity. But it makes it hard for readers who only follow particular ones.
