"Warners are coming down to New Zealand to move [The Hobbit] offshore"

Re: "Warners are coming down to New Zealand to move [The Hobbit] offsh

There were rallies at Wellington (main turnout, where Richard Taylor spoke and read a letter from Peter Jackson thanking people for their support), Christchurch, Hamilton, Queenstown and Matamata (where Hobbiton is built). Source 1. Source 2.

Re: NZ TV Interview - PJ is PISSED OFF!!!!!!

Bullshit. This is the logic of corporate threats and extortion. Solidarity in the face of this kind of nonsense is what has made living conditions for workers any better than barely tolerable in my country over the last century.

So just answer me this.. is it better to have a job that pays slightly less than usual or having no job at all because your union drove off the employer with their demands and refused to back down?

Third option: Unionize the workers at whatever other location your employer has moved to so that they'll have no choice but to give in to your union's demands.

You know, sort of like what Australia's union is doing with New Zealand's actors.

Highly unrealistic.. you can't "unionize" the entire world. At one point both parties need to come to terms but in this case the union is shooting itself in its own foot and claims it's doing that for the benefit of all.

The Hobbit in New Zealand a "50/50 chance" - NZ Prime Minister

http://tvnz.co.nz/national-news/hobbit-50-chance-staying-key-3853203

The Prime Minister has had preliminary talks with Warner Brothers executives and puts the chances of having The Hobbit movies made in New Zealand at 50/50.
John Key told TVONE's Breakfast that the union boycott, which has now been lifted, frightened the Americans.
"They [Warner Bros] have had their confidence severely rattled by the union," he said.
On the positive side, Key said Sir Peter Jackson lives in New Zealand, wants to make the movies in New Zealand, and Warners has already invested a hundred million dollars in New Zealand.
He is heartened that Warners is sending such a senior team of executives to meet with him this afternoon.
The hope is that Key can convince them that there will be no issues about filming the movies in New Zealand.

Also, thousands of passionate Kiwis turned out to rally for keeping the film here, although for some reason no rally was organised in my home town. I was there in spirit though. :)

Hollywood studio bosses go into talks tomorrow in Wellington with a loud and clear message that The Hobbit should be filmed in New Zealand.

Thousands of film industry workers rallied across the country today to try to keep the project New Zealand-made.

In Wellington, about 3000 people from the film and tourism industry turned up today to show Warner Brothers that New Zealand is behind the $670 million production.
Wellington's Weta Workshop, which will be heavily involved in making The Hobbit films if they go ahead in New Zealand, and hundreds of film technicians are hoping the movies will provide them with employment for the next few years.
They are very concerned about losing the two films and showed a lot of passion at the rally today.

Hopefully it stays. Last time it gave me a little bit of extra work so will try for it again.

Why not?

It's either unionize the world or re-establish the barriers to trade that existed before globalization. But we can't keep allowing giant corporations to rule the world the way they do today.

Can't wait for all the complaints that "you can see it's not in New Zealand and it's just not the same", when in fact you can't tell a difference on screen at all.

Bless your heart Sci.

You don't see that all your advocating for is, in your viewpoint, a slavemaster you approve of.

Having giant unions dictate to everyone what they should be allowed to do is fine. How much has to be paid, benefits given etc. That is just fine.

However, any giant corporation that sets it's pay scale and benefits they are evil.

I knew it was a brewery long before I was told, I just didn't feel like mentioning it at the time.

No, I'd rather that those unions be brought under stronger democratic control of their members. But union governance is a separate issue.

Yes, I do think that the overwhelming majority of giant corporations are, if not out-and-out evil, fundamentally corrupt and amoral.

Re: NZ TV Interview - PJ is PISSED OFF!!!!!!

And Large Organized Labor with a Hierarchy who gets disjointed from the lowest ranking line worker is all sunshine and rainbows innocent. Riiiight.

Linking to a biased documentary that ONLY is going to show some examples of corporations having made wrong choices doesn't prove your "overwhelming majority" opinion is a fact. Hell, I'd concede some have made poor choices.

So to sway you that Unions are and can be equally bad as large corporations all I need is a well crafted piece of film. Gotcha. :techman:

I'd guess you buy whole cloth everything Michael Moore puts in his movies as unbiased out and out truth as well. :p

I thought corporations were evil long before I ever saw that documentary.

Uh, yeah, sure, whatever you say, since you're obviously not actually addressing the content of I or that film are trying to say.

I can waste a 1.5hrs of my time in other ways. You cite it as a link to 'proof' corporations are evil. What more of a synopsis do I need than that?

As a New Zealander, I can assure you there will be a difference. :)

I still say the best thing about LOTR filming down in New Zealand was the location for Edoras. How many places could there be in the world that are as perfect as that was?
