A deal has been struck!

New Zealand prime minister John Key says the Hobbit movies will be filmed in his country after a deal was struck with Hollywood studio Warner Brothers.


The government will change laws covering film workers and will give producers extra financial incentives of more than $20 million.

Thank god. I have to admit I was beginning to accept that the production move was going to happen but I'm relieved that it's not.

Part of me was hoping that a move to recession-struck Ireland might give the economy there a much needed boost but the film-lover in me is happy that Middle Earth will stay in its real home.

This most likely means no extra delays due to relocating and whatnot.

Guess my hope was well-placed afterall. The Kiwis put a few extra coins into the pot (in exchange for an innovative promotional campaign, I might add), clarified the labor situation ... and WB agreed to stay. On top of everything, WB even generates solid goodwill by being loyal to PJ & NZ ... and saves money in the process.

Now go get those movies made! :techman:

The movie's already been greenlit, sets are already being constructed, actors have already been cast. Warner Bros. is footing the vast majority of the bill. It's happening.

NZ, "sad"? No member nation of the British Commonwealth is ever "sad"! Do you how many of the -anias and -akias would give their menfolks' left nuts to be the production homes of these movies? All of them, I'd bet. So, chin up! :p

Unions have outlived their usefulness by and large.
Unions have become what they say they oppose.
SEIU, UAW and the others have been shown to be every bit as selfish, stubborn and unrelenting as the EVIL BIG CORPORATIONS they say they despise.

SEIU money helped but Obama in the White House for god's sake. Yet people bitch if Wal-Mart makes a donation to the GOP. Hypocrisy my friend.

The thread started off, before NZ resecured the Hobbit films, about whether or not Unions were to blame for NZ nearly losing the Hobbit films. The discussion was about who is the bigger, greedier entity. The studio/big biz or unions. Did unions influence anything. So thanks for losing track of the flow of some of the conversation. Our conversation has been relevant to the OP on this topic. Thanks.

Fine. NZ has them again. SCI and can continue this at another time now that NZ has the films back.

Oh, come off it. You're right about the discussion moving to the role that the MEAA played in the problems with The Hobbit. (As you'll recall, I took a huge part in that conversation.) But then it went off on a massive tangent about whether or not unions have a role in today's world / corporations are evil, and then you started bellyaching about "unions put Obama in the White House," and it went downhill from there, without any discussion even tangentially related to the topic of The Hobbit. So don't try and play ignorant. This isn't TNZ, nor is this a political thread. There's a time and a place, and it isn't here.

Now, let's get to talking about who's going to voice Smaug. (Anyone who doesn't say Tom Waits is wrong.)
